Now What? [UPDATE]

A very confused end to a nasty campaign. It appears that Obama has been re-elected. Not clear what has happened with the popular vote at this moment, but I suppose once California comes in completely, he will win that--just barely.

OK. What does Obama do now? We are about to go over a fiscal cliff, and he denies it. Our economy is getting worse, and he denies it. Our poverty rate is getting worse, and he denies it. Our foreign policy has come apart at the seams, and he denies it. Al Qaeda is alive and well, and he denies it. Obamacare is about to ruin every small business in America, and he denies it. Our military is heading for an implosion, and he denies it. Iran is about to go nuclear, and he denies it. Our country has not been so divided in over one hundred years, and he denies it. He bears great responsibility for that division, and he denies it.

Obama has no plan to deal with any of our serious problems other than more taxes, more spending, more borrowing, more dependency on the government, and more glib lies. Obama will face an angry and intransigent House of Representatives that will not be impressed by Obama's "mandate." He will face a House that will be investigating a series of very serious scandals: Benghazi, "Fast and Furious," Solyndra, the miserable response to hurricane Sandy, and who knows what else is out there in the Obama boneyard? He will encounter a revitalized Al Qaeda, and a nasty, vengeful Russia, and have nothing in his quiver with which to ward them off. After a bit, even our hideous and tame mass media will have to acknowledge the disasters and the paralysis, and then what? Ask your friends who voted for Obama: see if they have the answers that their candidate does not.

Yes, the GOP needs to undergo introspection: how could it lose to Obama and dishonest hacks such as Elizabeth Warren and Claire McCaskill? More important, however, as the Obama second term spins into a spiral of disaster, we, the American people, need some introspection. We need to think about how we could elect somebody such as Obama to the White House, not once but twice, and the second time after he had proven his incompetence and danger to the Republic. Have we become a people who want the government to take care of us? Willing to surrender our freedoms for an envelope full of food stamps and an earful of banal speeches from the Oval Office? Is that what we have become?

UPDATE: A very prescient comment from one of our readers, Evilmav2,
Welcome to institutionalized rule by the 47%. Even if Catholics, coal miners, the Jewish community, etc... had voted a little more sanely in this election's battleground states, and given Romney the edge he needed to win there, the blue state political machinery and their fellow travelers in the legal professions, universities, and media would have viciously fought and clawed to steal the narrow victory away, constitution be damned.

As the arteries of Democrat power harden in the capital, and as more and more urban dwelling Americans get used to living off of their $1000 a month in SS disability, subsidized low income housing, Obama phones, Obamacare, and Eat Better Today cards, I'd expect that it is going to become very unlikely that we will soon see another chance as good as we did this year to put an actual old timey, pro-American tradition, pro-Mainstreet Republican in the White House.

In today's divided America, I'd bet Obama's toxic coalition of welfare dependents, privileged coastal manager-class whites, public sector unionists, university grandees, female gender warriors, clientized African Americans, and Hispanics will only grow in political power- giving the ruling coalition all the bread and circuses votes, armed federal police powers, currency printing presses, and governmentally suborned media assistance that any respectable despot and his party could wish for to retain their grip on power.

  5. Diplomad, sir, it is my belief that most Americans have never faced the reality of their existence - but Obama is going to offer them that opportunity. Anyone who has spent any time in a 3rd world hell-hole can observe the depths of depravity and bare-bones needs first hand. Americans though have not had to suffer these degradations for many decades. Just like the college kid in the 1960s who takes acid for the experience, and ends up in the mental ward for life - so seems our society. Totally disconnected with the possibilities of life changing bad decisions. If anything, perhaps there is just to much comfort available in this rich country.

Sometimes I think of the ghouls who attend stock car races for the express purpose of seeing the car crashes, or the sixteen year old who knows that he'll never die in a car wreck. Life has become entertainment for many people, not something to overcome. Only those who struggle every day have something to overcome.

About President Obama's long long list of denial. I'm sorry Sir, but what makes you think he cares? People only solve problems that they can identify as a problem. No problem = no solution. I see no indication he cares about anything, other than himself. In a strong and morally robust society Obama may have ended his days as a small businessman, but America is neither strong nor robust (morally or ethically). We have not been strong for a couple of decades nor morally robust for over fifty years.

    2. As someone who takes the Good Book very, very seriously (I am one of those horrible Evangelical Rightists you've heard about), I think you've probably posted the most relevant comment here.

In these years of the O, we Americans are eerily like the Israelites who wanted a king back in the days of Samuel the prophet. We wish to be like the nations round about us, with great rhetoric, contempt for work, and a cradle-to-grave welfare system, but we are soon to find out that these are ruinous luxuries.

Back in 2007 when I was listening to obama for the first time, I was having deja vu of all the dear leaders I grew up under forced to dress in dark skirt and white blouse cheering their national holidays...or painting grass green awaiting visits from one of their lapdogs...
obama's idiotic speeches about stopping the oceans, reigning in the winds and harvesting the Sun's warmth....

Agree. For starters, when are Republicans going to learn that the country has changed significantly and that they will lose every time on the abortion issue blowback? They need to walk away from it. Legal abortion isn't going to be repealed federally, even if it was it would fall into the blue states and be legalized again. And gay marriage, throw it to state level voter referendums and take no public position on it. Why start the whole cascade of lefty "war on(pick a victim)" distortions and hysteria.

It's not worth losing this once great democracy over both of those social issues.

    2. Penny, not all of us consider abortion an "issue." Some of us are willing to call it what it is, murdering the most helpless among us.

I suggest you read the Rise and Fall of The Roman Empire. Once the Romans lost respect for human life, including the unborn, and started immigrating workers from other nations to support their lavish, and decadent, life styles, Rome crashed. We are well on our way of repeating history.

  8. Deeply disappointing. Here in Australia we are fighting our own stealth socialists and crony capitalists. We know the feeling of the impotence of the little people against quiet statist brutality; and the constant, constant lies from the socialist government and pre-bought media.

It would have been a huge shot in the arm for the United States to take a step towards sobriety.

But our problem is the same as yours. In a funny way, the problem is not the bad people or even the bad people who pretend to be good people.

The problem is the good people who want >>so much<< to believe that Obama is the post-racial lightbringer, the money is in the bank, all problems are manageable, everything is the same as it used to be, and nobody will hurt us if we are nice.

My husband and his family are just like that. They live in a PBS-type media bubble and work hard and are very nice people, and can't believe anybody would be so not-nice as to lie or cheat or steal from them or hurt them for ideological reasons. I think they will -eventually- be rather saddened by the twenty-first century as it unfolds. But even then they will assume that nobody could have seen it coming, and that that nice man Mr Obama had nothing to do with it.

Be well, nurture the flickering flame of resistance.

  11. The victory is very easily explained by a planted algorithm in the voting machine software. Algorithms leave fingerprints; numerical patterns. It was suspected during the McCain election loss. There is no meaningful oversight or certification of the software code used in the machines on voting day.

But consider the other problem; the online credit card collection portals set up by the Obama campaign that paid roughly 300% above normal ordinary fees because they insisted the online portals be non-secure and allow anonymous, untraceable donations to be made online.

Couple this to the refusal of corporate media to investigate or report the magnitude of the Benghazi scandal and murder of Ambassador Stevens.

How are electioneering and racketeering statutes not violated by a for-hire corporate media that collects billions from the political campaigns and only selectively reports high crimes and misdemeanors to protect the hysteresis of both parties funneling extra cash. These media parasites in order to correct or continue the paucity of material fact and corrupt self-dealilng by a media parasites are besotted with electioneering proceeds, and they appear to manipulate the presentation and withholding of material fact to ensure their proceeds from election advertising purchases are optimized. Does anyone else see this as an ongoing criminal enterprise?

A relevant quote for the morning after:

On Monday I wrote that in addition to the fiscal cliff we are on, we are surrounded by enemies that are now emboldened by the reelection of Barack Obama. Our allies -- especially Israel -- should be quaking in its boots with the whirlwind we are about to reap. In that post, I added an epigraph where Abraham Lincoln states that "if destruction be [America's] lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

Let us pray, truly sincerely pray, that all the things we have been warning about do not come to pass, because I think we, as a nation, committed suicide last night.

I agree, but I think it's going to be long and slow and torturous. The thing that really nauseates me is the shabbiness of it all. The low rent, Jersey Shore, JayZ, Kardashian elements. The Lena Dunhams and Sandra Flukes and other pretentious urban dwellers. The "gimme free stuff" Americans in strategic precincts of large electoral states.

David Gerlernter sounded the culture warning - yet even he predicted Romney would win, and that we'd have a little time remaining to battle on the culture front and genuinely turn the tide. He was overly optimistic I'm afraid.

    Psalm 146

Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.
Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.

His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God

Standing in line to vote yesterday, contemplating.

I, as well as the other people in the line, were concerned about the outcome of the presidential election. I recalled a comment that I read recently that it is too bad that we should care so much about the person who’s going to be the next president.

In a country called America a few generations ago, the president was a guy in the White House many miles away from us who had almost no impact on our daily lives. He was in charge of the federal bureaucracy; he picked his department heads and talked with members of congress. He was an administrator, the “commander in chief” during wartime, not a “leader” in the style of the dictators of the 20th century. The president knew his place and left the people to run their lives the way they saw fit. Today we look to the president to dispense birth control pills, pass out free cell phones and decide what’s on school lunch menus. On some days he picks a name out of a stack of cards and orders drones to kill specific people around the world. And when he’s not busy doing that his appointees tells your doctor how to treat you aching joints.

    All with borrowed money.

That’s when the verse from the Bible bubbled its way to the top of my head. I’m sorry that Romney lost. But it isn’t because I wanted Romney to be my leader. It’s because I reasoned that Romney would be less likely than Obama to want to run my life. I had hope that some of the tentacles of the creature called “The Presidency” would slither back and leave me alone.

I went to bed early last night because the process of watching the election returns is not something that entertains me. The only things that count are the results. This morning I found out and I am temporarily gloomy. But this mood will pass because life goes on. My parents and most of my family experienced much worse that this in Nazi occupied Europe when death surrounded them like a blanket. They survived, persevered and thrived.

There is a spirit in America that has been all but extinguished in Europe; the spirit of free men who escaped Europe, the province of kings, princes and “leaders” for centuries. It will take more than 8 years of Obama to quench that spirit as long as we remind ourselves that we should not put our trust in princes.

  26. ' MAYBE the Republicans should have RUN an actual old timey, pro-American tradition, pro-Mainstreet Republican... '

We did, and that's the point.

Putting aside any objections to his religion, Mitt Romney would have been better suited to run as a candidate for president of the United States in 1960 or 1980 than he was yesterday.

Barring some historically significant calamity or jarring event, generational demographic changes in the America of 2008 have essentially ended the ability of the South, ranching and agricultural West, and agricultural Midwest to elect an 'old timey, pro-American tradition, Pro-mainstreet' Republican candidate to the White House.

This is mainly because the venerable old WWII generation that was the strongest factor in deciding American elections from 1950-2004 is now almost a non-factor in a national race, and with their passing go their old concerns about Right and Wrong; Lying versus telling the truth; Saving versus Spending; etc...

The WWII generation are the last generation that remembers what real national danger means, in the forms of war and real economic collapse, and they had a quaint habit of voting for Democrat or Republican alike, mainly based on whether they trusted a candidate and whether they thought they were likely to do a good job, and that's gone now.

    What's replaced it?

An enormous voting block of libertine, venal, privileged baby boomers who will do anything to ensure that their SS retirement income is unthreatened, the urban dwelling welfare block who's creation as a voting political force might end up being Obama's greatest legacy, the aristocracy of the white coastal elites, and all the other client groups and Democrat partner constituencies that I mentioned in the post that the Diplomad was kind enough to post above.

Basic demographic change was a huge contributing factor to the Romney loss yesterday, and that's why it's likely to be very difficult in the near future for old timey, pro-American tradition, pro-Mainstreet voters to defeat the strengthening Democrat coalition and put a Republican back in the White House, much less, stop the runaway American debt train before it goes off the cliff...

    1. I agree with a lot of your comment but draw different conclusions. Romney garnered fewer votes than McCain four years ago. Obama garnered much fewer votes. I thought the conservative base was energized - it was not. I thought the liberal base was demoralized - it was.

I question the nomination process. Just as you call out the white coast elites, I point toward the back room, cigar chompin' puppet masters of the republican party. Remember how Romney was from the beginning considered the favorite? In all early polls he consistently pulled about 25%. One by one the other potential candidates were picked off and discarded. One or two were obviously not up to the task at hand. The rest had flaws (just as Romney did) but could never overcome the initial momentum that had been preordained for Romney.

Romney did not/could not energize the conservative base. Had he reached out to the tea party crowd things might have played out differently. Had Romney attacked Obama on Benghazi and on Obama's policy toward Israel he could have reclaimed momentum in those few days following the storm. But he didn't and we all lost.

I sense that the republican party is all too happy to eat their own and of course the democrats cheer them on.

  27. That said, I'm more worried about how far the Democratic coalition will go to hold on to their power in the future. If Romney had come closer yesterday, and eked out an electoral college win, I don't know if the Obama machine would have been willing to concede.

It's hard to let go of power when you've grown accustomed to it, and I think this condition will only become more pronounced in the future for the Democrat coalition. What's a little voter fraud, or some massaging of the returns in a certain state, if you know that you are doing it for the greater good? The longer a ruling group stays in power, the easier these questions are to answer...

  28. DiploMad, all day I have been going through the first stage of grief; extreme sorrow. I know that anger will follow, and then the determination to continue on. That is the process of grief; sorrow, anger, determination.

But honestly, did any real conservative expect an outcome different than what we got? I didn't just as I didn't in 2008. And let me explain my reasoning:

    1) for the last few presidential election cycles the GOP has backed the guy who lost to the last nominee. Bush beat McCain in the primaries, so McCain became the heir apparent. McCain beat Romney in the 2008 primaries, so Romney because the heir apparent. And so it goes. That is the first thing that has to change.

    2) the natinal GOP has lost touch with their voter base, specificially those flyover states. Romney was a liberal squich as governor, and when he no longer had to actually govern, he became a conservative in word only. He is a "compassionate conservative" on steroids. In any other part of the nation, besides the East/West coasts, his governorship would have been considered quite liberal.

    3) The nation is changing. I heard today that 25% of Americans want to live off the government, and 25% want to let them. That is Obama's winning numbers with a few greenweenies thrown in for good measure. The GOP has failed to do two things: address the ever increasing apathy of Americans toward putting in an honest day's labor and stand hard on conservative values the put Ronald Reagan in office.

Conservatives are hungry for someone who will defend our beliefs in God, our history as a moral nation and our pride as Americans. And while Romney claimed those traits, his record belied the claim. Look at the numbers. They don't lie.

Obama took 200K less this time than in '08. But John McCain garnered almost 2,900,000 more votes than Mitt Romney. Conservatives are tired of holding their noses to vote for someone who does not espouse their values. The values that made this nation great.

So what is next? Perhaps it is time to apply some tough love. Economic failure in 2013 or economic failure in 2020. It will be painful no matter when it happens, and is it better to just get it over with while the Democrats hold the White House and the Senate? I don't have the answer.

We are, today, a changed nation that has seen 51% of the voting populace decide that socialism is not so bad, after all. But only because they have never really had to live under it. They pretent that it is the government's position to take care of them, not realizing that slavery is all the same no matter the plantation or the overseer.

For me, I just thank God every day that I live in Texas, probably the last remaining truely free state in the nation.

    1. I think the most telling fact is how McCain was able to garner so much more support than Romney. Romney won the nomination but was not able to capitalize on what should have been an energized conservative base. I characterized Romney as a moral Bill Clinton. He would have been head and shoulders above Obama as president but his light was dim compared to Reagan or even Bush (the second). I saw the same 'next man in line' scenario being played out. Didn't work before, didn't work this time.
