Trump Has a Good Day

Well, how about that? Donald Trump caught Hillary Clinton flatfooted. He, unexpectedly, snapped up  the invite from Mexican President Peña Nieto to the two major U.S. candidates and flew down to Mexico City to discuss a range of issues. Hillary sniped at him for a "photo op" visit and issued a lame statement saying she would go to Mexico at "an appropriate time." Her speech on foreign policy and national defense to the American Legion was completely overshadowed (note: Not a bad speech, but it's impossible for me to take Hillary seriously on national defense given her RECORD.)

His visit to Mexico was a risky one. He risked, of course, physical harm or, more probable, an embarrasing incident or two that would become headlines for weeks. None of that happened. The Mexican President treated Trump with respect and courtesy, and Trump reciprocated. One of the amazing things to come out of the visit, something almost ignored by the media, was that Peña expressed willingness to renegotiate NAFTA! This from CNBC,
Pena Nieto said he and Trump disagree on some topics, but added that cooperation between the countries is essential. He noted that the North American Free Trade Agreement, a frequent Trump punching bag, has benefited both countries but can be improved.
Trump's not even president and he has gotten Mexico to agree to "improve" NAFTA!  Not to mention, of course, that Peña did not reject the idea of a wall to protect "both countries."

Give Trump some credit, folks, give him sone credit.

His immigration speech later in the day in Arizona was also very good. I have only two criticisms:

1) it perhaps might have been better to delay it a day or so so as not to step on his visit to Mexico;

2) I would have mentioned the idea of a temporary suspension of immigration until we have a new system in place.

Those, of course, are minor quibbles. His speech was good, provided a lot of solid proposals, and put the focus on how our out-of-control immigration system puts the nation at risk. I haven't heard anything comparable from Hillary Clinton.

A good day for Trump. I think the Clinton campaign had better start sweating. In my view, they are preparing to lash out at a Trump who is no longer there. There is a new Trump on the campaign trail who is highly unpredictable, savvy, and very nimble.

Keep it up.

  1. Yes, it was a very good day for Mr. Trump.

What's gratifying, at least, is that both poles of American opinion are now fully in play at a national level.

  2. Might be what I expected to happen, momentum.
I'm sure Trump would rather hit the polls on an upward approval swing than duke it out with back-and-forths at the last minute.
Trump's challenge is still huge, as there's tremendous value in getting 'first female president' out of the way before Warren tries to take it.

He's got a tough road ahead to come over the 'women for women' vote (which I'm suspecting will be quite lopsided even though not nearly 100%).

    1. I live in the People's Republic of Cambridge, MA and if there is one thing that even my Liberal friends and relatives agree with me on it's that if there is somebody worse on the campaign trail then Hilary Clinton, it's Elizabeth Warren. There is a reason she didn't get involved in the Presidential Election this year and it wasn't just fear of the Clinton Mafia.

    2. If we ever have Elizabeth Warren as candidate for POTUS, I hope someone has the indecency to incessantly refer to her as Fauxahontas.

  4. Trump was showing off his stamina; he can meet a foreign leader and deliver a major policy speech in one day.

  5. Not just stamina, but also courage, opportunism, spontaneity, negotiating skills and love of country. All Hellery has going for her is the Foundation hacks to tell her what to do next (and her plumbing).

    1. The point about stamina is sound. Hellary is a semi-invalid, it would seem: Trump showing off his vigour is good tactics.

I think you mean suspension old chap.

Anyhow to cut to the chase this is the BBC take on the events.

Somewhat different from yours. But no surprise there. I prefer your nuanced view.

Per InstaPundit, Hillary! is losing momentum among female voters: https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/242693/

Which may or may not translate into more support for Trump, but it shouldn't hurt him.

    1. might be making some inroads there, but I'm still suspicious.. my very conservative mother despises hillary for every reasonable reason (there are just too many), but when I really push the topic, she agrees that she'll probably end up voting for her for just that reason... *some* (obviously not all, or perhaps not a majority, I don't know, but definitely *some*) women who grew up in the 40's, 50's and 60's, just have it ingrained now in a way that goes beyond reason. Kind of America's 'fault' for not having had a female president before... but the real disaster is yet to come if she's elected.

    2. I was born in 1951. It took me awhile to ditch feminism and Democrats. Now I question whether women should have the vote :). When I read that "first woman President" stuff , I ask them" Isn't it time we vote for someone based on their policies and accomplishments?" And then I ask them to list Hillary's accomplishments as Senator and Secretary of State. I've asked that at least a dozen times and no one has ever given me an answer.

  8. She raised $143 million in August. No wonder, if you wanted a demonstrably corrupt politician in power, you'd too donate.

  9. And just as an FYI, when I am doing battle on Facebook, I am respectful but make them justify their vote for Hillary. It's too easy for them to just bash Trump.

I've been watching Trump rallies since the Alabama one. It is amazing how well he has this down now. He's focused yet can still ad lib. I read these dumb posts about how Trump is too stupid to win and will back out of the debates. He beat out 16 candidates. When he does that first debate, she won't know what hit her.

  10. If you read all the "pundits" talking about how bad he did etc etc, he must have had a very good day. Oh, my mother says that if Hillary becomes Prez anytime anything goes wrong she'll bump her head and the media will swoon.

  11. If anyone in your family still supports Hillary, buy them the graphic novel "Clinton Cash." It is available as a book or an ebook. Brilliantly done, a quick read, full of hair raising true facts about the corruption of the Clintons since Hillary became a senator--and the incredible human suffering it has caused. No woman should be willing to vote for Hillary after what happened to the Yazidis and to the people of Haiti, just to name two cases.

    2. Sad to say, but "A Texan Looks at Lyndon" did not sway many votes, either. Remember, they also painted Goldwater as a wild and dangerous radical. Same playbook, same plays.

  12. I followed a link to the Wa Po, and it sure does sound like Trump had a disastrous speech in Mexico. And some guy, (Colbert?) was frightened by it. I thought it was pretty good. Now I see it was even better than that.

But, maybe I need to go down the hall to the Stupid Questions Department, but why is immigration control, e.g.adopting Mexico's immigration policies, Raaaacist? Or even "discriminatory" We don't allow discrimination in certain categories in this country, but now we can't discriminate against, for example, armed North Koreans? The Bill of Rights was written to prevent the government from treating us like foreign enemies. I do not see how it is possible to say that the obverse is also truye.
