Operation Barbarossa and its Lessons for Today

Seventy-six years ago, June 22, 1941, Hitler launched "Operation Barbarossa," the massive invasion of the Soviet Union. It involved some 4.5 million Axis troops, over three million of them German, and within six months had placed the Nazis on the outskirts of Moscow, and, it seemed, on the verge of a total victory over Stalin's USSR. In the end, of course, it didn't turn out that way. I will not go into a military history of Barbarossa and the disaster into which it ultimately became for the Axis powers; some of the readers of this blog probably could write volumes about WWII. No, that's not the purpose of this little piece.

I began thinking about Barbarossa as I watched a couple of clips of lefty Democrats going on and on about Trump-Russia "collusion." Interesting that the American left now have sudden concerns about not just our national security, but with Russian "influence." They fret and rage that Putin colluded with Trump to thwart Hillary Clinton's bid for the White House. They fret and rage, of course, despite the lack of any evidence that such "collusion" took place.

It is worth recalling that in days not really so long ago, there was collusion between the left and the Moscow. In fact, the collusion was so close that the left was willing to accept the Molotov-Von Ribbentrop Pact without skipping a beat. Let us not forget that prior to the signing in August 1939 of that "Non-Aggression" accord between Moscow and Berlin, the left in Europe and America was vehemently anti-Nazi--remember the Spanish Civil War. Once, however, word came out that Hitler and Stalin had reached an understanding, the left switched to opposing war against the Nazis. We should note, for example, that the Communists in France, responding to orders from Moscow, gave up non-Communist members of the French resistance to the Nazi occupiers and a slow, painful death. Communists in America and Europe opposed helping the evil capitalist imperialists in London as Churchill's Britain waged its desperate and lonely war against the Nazis. All that changed in an instant when the Nazi alliance invaded the USSR. Suddenly, "We have always been at war with Eastasia Hitler" was the slogan and the left insisted we forget about the Molotov-Von Ribbentrop Pact, the invasion of Finland, the Nazi-Soviet partition of Poland, etc. Through its well-placed web of agents and fellow-travelers in the mass media, academia, and, of course, the government bureaucracy (see Senator McCarthy) suddenly the message was one of concern for national security and of the imperative need to defeat Hitler--and save the USSR.

They are at it, again.

Bernie Sanders, who honeymooned in the USSR, and his band of followers, who have never had a kind word to say about American national security, are up-in-arms about Russian "interference" in our elections. Bernie, of course, is not alone. Democrats and other assorted lefties, such as Hillary Clinton who with her husband engaged in, shall we say, some highly profitable "collusion" with Moscow, and even tried to "reset" relations with Russians, have formed a chorus demanding an "explanation" of Trump's alleged collusion with Russia, and even put out demands for Trump's impeachment. It would seem that Communist Russia, aka the USSR, was something for us to  co-exist with while the much weaker Russia of Putin is something for us to fear. We hear that Russia is taking over!

"We have always been at war with Eastasia Russia."

  1. Great article. I've said for months that if it were still the Soviet Union the Dems would be twisting themselves in knots. How can we attack Trump and not smear those peace loving democratic fellows on the Politburo? This requires Tom Friedman levels of rationalization. It was good when Teddy Kennedy did it to keep Regan from being re-elected but, but,... Trump,is evil.

  6. A long time ago I lived next door, in England, to a Polish man. In 1939 he went to officer training school in his home country only to be captured by the Russians, invading from the east. He was spared being made to lie down at gun point so a tank could be driven over the 'aristocrats' who had that criminal mark of smooth hands. This man was raised on a farm so he had rough hands. That alone saved his life. He later escaped the Russians, was caught by the Germans, escaped again and ended up being wounded fighting with the Belgian resistance. Shipped to Scotland to recover by the Allies, he wanted to go to Canada but they turned him down, so he ended up raising a family in England.

Interestingly enough he married an Italian woman who had I believe hidden from the Germans in Roman ruins during fighting around Naples.

Anyway, when this old man told me his story understandably I came to dislike the Russians more than the Germans. But then the National Socialists were the natural enemies of Soviet Russia. I mean, two brands of Socialism can never live happily side by side, can they?

  7. I don't understand why American pols want war with Russia. A failed-state Russia, 1/6 of world's land mass, full of unsecured nukes, would have been biggest threat of all. That's where Russia was headed. Only Putin was able stop it and get control. Autocrat and thug, yes. But with no democratic tradition, what other type of man could be have succeeded? I think we should be damn grateful he was there and took charge.

It seems to me we and EU have been meddling in Russia's backyard, in areas under their hegemoney for centuries with huge ethnic Russians populations. We have an official project with a name like "Expanding Democracy" - something like that, the purpose of which is to....meddle in Ukrainian and other elections. (The irony. McCain, of course, is very involved.) I think Putin took Crimea (with the population's consent) to protect his access to his Black Sea bases and coast. My understanding is Bush 41 promised Gorbachev that we wouldn't expand NATO - but we did, and EU did. The EU even worse than us, I think. David Cameron talked of an EU "stretching from the Atlantic to the Urals."

Is it relevant that Russia is again a Christian country? Is that the reason for the war/hatred? Christian, vaguely democratic (which desribes us now), corrupt (which describes us now). Are we now harder on Russia than Iran?

    3. My suspicion is that the left considers Islam to be the "last chance against democratic capitalism". Obviously it's not that they want Islam to dominate over their marxism, but perhaps they want Islam to 'soften the west up' for the taking.
It's a tricky calculus... for the most part, they've been calling these things mostly to their benefit.... ie, pick and choose which 'intolerance' you will decide to have be 'tolerated'.
I read a book called 'Influencer' that was rather unapologetic about how control of media delivers control to those tuned to using the medium. They failed to predict the Twitter-Trump 'allied powers', which are much analogous to Stalinist Russia and dthe USA.

By 1941, the NKVD had 22 journalists working directly as agents in the United States alone. The list included journalists writing for the United Press, Time Magazine, Reuters, CBS News, and other mainstream outlets.

Besides those agents working directly for the Soviet government, there were numerous other “fellow travelers” who swam in the same circles and disseminated similar information.

Their dual roles were rendered more difficult by the problem of defending the Great Terror and the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Hitler, but they continued to operate on behalf of Soviet interests as World War II began.

For instance, one agent, Time magazine foreign correspondent Stephen Laird, would falsely paint the Soviet occupation of Poland starting in 1944 in glowing terms and described the rigged election of 1947 as “free and fair.”

  9. Question to Diplomad, who never answers my questions:

How did Soviet Russia's natural resources end up in hands of private oligarchs? This happened while Jeffrey Sachs, then of Harvard, more recently of Columbia's Earth Institute (global warming), was advising Yeltsin on capitalism.

Gorbachev, surprisingly, was a very early member of the Club of Rome, the original "sustainability" people, who then propelled "global warming" hysteria. Those are Sach's people, too. Which leads me back to wanting to know what role Sachs played in where natural resources ended up. Pure corruption unrelated to sustainability/global warming agenda, which is most likely, or somehow connected to the oligarch world of the Club of Rome people? If you have not spent a decade as a global warming skeptic and horrified observer of the UN's Agenda21, this question will make no sense to you. But I hope it will.

    1. I met Sachs on several occasions hen he was at the height of his power. He was held up to be something of a god by our AID people. I didn't know enough about him one way or the other but did see that he charged enormous fees from some very poor governments. He also, as you note, became involved in promoting UN involvement in the global warming hoax. There I parted company with him for sure. The issue of how all these Russian billionaires suddenly emerged was one, by coincidence, that my son and I were discussing just a couple of days ago. No good answers except that there must have been massive corruption in the waning days of the USSR and certain people were lined up to take over vast enterprises. I have not seen a good book or explanation on the emergence of these super billionaires out of a Marxist regime.

    2. Diplomad, thank you for answer. Here is what I wonder, and this would be biggest conspiracy ever. The Club of Rome/sustainability/Agenda 21 people want oligarchs. That is how they are organizing the world. Gorbachev was or became a member of Club of Rome, which imho, is one of the public fronts of whoever the "they" are who are orchestrating events. Did Gorbachev collapse the Soviet Union to create those oligarchs and put the natural resources in their hands? It is the Sachs involvement, plus the Gorbachev Club of Rome membership, which raise that question for me.

At very least, Sachs did some lousey advising about capitalism. But as a global warming fanatic, Sachs doesn't like capitalism.

No response needed. This is conjecture and not solvable one way or another. I appreciate your input about Sachs.

People like Deng Xiaoping, having found that power is a very fickle and dangerous currency (especially when a loon like Mao is two steps ahead of you), decided that his son and others would have a different kind of currency in which to deal.

Further, in those days of the early '90's, the solidity of the Chinese Communist regime was still a question.

My guess is that a lot of well-connected Soviet, oops, Russian citizens were seeing the handwriting on the wall when the Reaganites were passing on the message that we could piss in the Soviets' back yard if we really wanted to.

BTW, Dip, when I entered Foggy Bottom in 1989, there were people running around asking each other "what in the name of Sam Hill is going on?" as the demonstrations swirled everywhere from Shanghai to the Elbe, and the Communist grip was clearly slipping. How did things look at the higher levels during that time?

Beyond his sponsoring of the change in immigration law in 1965 to shifting priority to less educated, culturally different and intolerant people and families in 3rd world countries causing many of the problems we face today, Teddy was in his proposal to the government of the USSR as close as one can be to being a traitor when we had no official enemy; similar to Benedict Arnold.

And aside, Churchill thought the absence of the aristocracy from the Battle of Britain, with most pilots being from the middle class, gave the middle class the right to rule having saved the nation.

In regards to the questions about Russia/Putin, the May 26 Free Thoughts podcast with "Putin's economist" Andrei Illarionov gives some insight into Putin from someone who was a principle in Putin's "free market" education. One takeaway, Putin sees Russia's historical sphere of influence as his own fiefdom so rough diplomacy by the US in those areas did not go down well.

Interesting, this guy became an advisor to Putin because when the Soviet Union fell, he was the only Russian economics student who had "wasted" his time on studying markets. Markets being an interest of his that he was advised was a career killer in Soviet economics.

He is polite and mean towards men like McCain, " he lives in yesterdays era". The idea of removing such a leader and bring this enormous country into chaos is simply lunatic. Good heavens, my poor country, neighboring Sweden, would be totally overrun with Russians. Trump won the election promising a better relationship with Russia. Btw, the problem with identifying the stripes on a pol-cat is that their political ideology is often clouded by their personal greed, or vice versa.

The Clintons are a case in point, while their prescription for the masses is socialism, their personal ideological fix is "pay to play". And here too we begin to see Putin's dirty-handed theft of socialism as medicine for the proletariat, hidden by Putins NEW old cloak of benevolent patriarchism complete with Czarist quest for Empire. BUT Still, No less of a socio-Marxist-progressive thief, by design and scope, than the Clinton and Obama regimes, only the national audience is changed.

Oliver Stone, in his interview with Putin asked about Snowden's dirty deeds. Putin replied he could not condone Snowden's behavior, "he should have resigned" - No kidding Vlad! Is there any doubt though, that had Snowden been on Putin's team, he never would have gotten out of London alive, not that he necessarily deserved too! Although the DNC's Seth Rich murder does raise some unsettling thoughts about whistle blowers...

He's actually fit the historical profile of any successful Russian leader--he's for Russia first and foremost, and sees himself in some way as a Tsar. Not that much different from either Stalin or Peter the Great.

Washington warned the US that nations have their own interests and will pursue them when he cautioned against entangling alliances. Putin is proof of that. We can work with Putin when his and our interests coincide but we must never forget that Putin is interested in Russia primarily.

The Democrats had at that time 58 members in the congress and 10 members in the senate proudly listed as card carrying members. There were no independents nor republicans.

Is this not fair game for investigation into the Russian nexus of political influence?

And just this month the state of Kalifornia made the Communist Party legal within the state, whereas it is not legal per the US legal code. Mao, Pal Pot, Che, and Castro are well-known communists and mass murders. Would it be fair to throw in for good measure another socialist movement that led to mass murder, aka the National Socialists here?

Republicans are the party of Lincoln, and many members proudly trace their roots to the founding fathers.

It seems Trump should have the NSA provide him the last known membership records of CPUSA and DSA - if a republican is found among them, them hang him or her along with the rest of anti-America's who have membership in a foreign politican or illegal organization.

The beautiful thing about BAD laws,
is that we can change them, and just
maybe, with another Trump pick, we
      can change more of them...

    4. Hey OW, hope you enjoyed (as appropriate) a Happy Father's Day.

To your querying Davod, "Got a link?" I did a little research as I, was kinda interested myself. There was (passed in 1954) 68 Stat. 775, 50 U.S.C. 841-844 - which, on its face appears to've done "nearly" precisely that.

However far as the statute coming before SCOTUS that had to wait until 1965 in United States v. Brown
381 U.S. 437. Interestingly the Court (Warren) decided the law was unconstitutional - far as I can tell the original statute hadn't got much attention until Mr. Brown's case hit the Appeals Circuit:

    5. Hey JK!
Tks for the citations, link, and history!
So, it was Earl Warren and his herd of liberal justices -- who ultimately cloaked the Communist menace within State and Federal governments, not surprised. Expect tho, they're forgiven by the Press, and spared contempt in perpetuity, since the Warren Court and the American people of that era weren't privy to Venona project evidence/testimony. Suspect even mean Joe McCarthy wears wings by now, at least topside!

Btw, the current unbalanced S.Court recently accomplished another assault on the 2nd Amendment, coming out of the California Peruta case. The upside was that Thomas' dissent was supported by Gorsuch... So, what's the latest Vegas line on Ginsburg falling into eternal sleep before July 4th? On Watch~~~

P.S. Tks, for the Father's Day 'appropriation', it was a nice day, and I don't get ties anymore, how was your day, if apropos! ;)

      Delete
    6. No ties (thank God they've finally figured out I simply will not abide 'em anymore now that I'm "recovering").

However I did get what I really enjoy. Long telephone calls!

The kids have finally figured out now that they've got Grandkids of their own, that, no longer does it suffice when I ask 'em what they're doing "Aw nuthin' really" doesn't quite cut the mustard if you know what I mean.

I even got "longish" calls from the Grandkids. The Great Grandkids I can't really bitch about as those are still mostly at the Rugrat stage. (On the other hand .. they'll be easier (hope springs eternal) to buy Christmas presents for.

And .. the kids and their kids have finally picked up on, "Hey Pop [Grandpa] I'd really appreciate you co-signing on a late model Corvette" ain't gonna do 'em much good now that I'm living on my pension.

All in all, pretty fine days spent.

  20. A little known historic fact: Barbarosa was not supposed to start June 22,(also Napoleon's invasion day), but May 15th. We can thank Mussolini. October 28, 1940 he attacked Greece, and got in so much trouble Hitler had to divert forces to attack Yugoslavia and Greece.

Imagine the Germans with another month before bad weather slows their advance. Hitler tours the Kremlin November 1941.

History is full of strange twists. A decision to use a private server. Stupid emails. The stolen 1960 election makes Dick paranoid. An Arab hears an "angel". So many turning points. You could write a book.

Calling Muslim guests to the church “angels“, the Bishop later took to her official blog to explain that removing Christian symbols from the church and preparing the building for Muslim prayer doesn’t make a priest any less a defender of the faith. Rather, to do any less would make one “stingy towards people of other faiths”.

With respect for The Bishop's life expectancy, saving LOST souls, let us pray she doesn't run into a practicing Fun-Duh-Mental Muslin whilst preaching to her choir!

    2. Ever wonder why the Soviets didn't do much to stop the Germans for quite a long time after the attack? And why a significant portion of their soldiers entered the battlefield UNARMED, once they got their act together? (Second wave was expected to pick up dropped/captured weapons)

Stalin was paranoid about the army, so no weapons were issued until they got aimed at an enemy. Most all the army's supplies were staged just back from the border, since the Soviets were planning to invade the Germans.

Their invasion date was planned for a week later than the Germans came over the border. OOPS! The Germans captured huge amounts of supplies shortly after entering.

I've lost my source, but this invasion data was found in their archives, IIRC.

    3. Nope. Barbarossa goes off a month earlier, battle of Moscow happens a month earlier, mebbe. Rasputitsa still rips the Germans a new one, their logistics were still mostly horse-drawn. The panzers still outrun their supply. Uncle Joe hasn't run out of bodies to feed the nazi maw, yet. One might also note that the 'New Soviet Man' was notable by his absence while Unca Joe steadily invoked 'Holy Mother Russia'. He knew NSM was BS from the start with the kulaks. And without the kulaks, he's a dead dictator walking. Whatever else he was, he wasn't stupid.

    4. I find I've taken a fondness to Netflix's foreign movies. Two in particular seem germane to this: 'The White Tiger', and 'Siege of Sevastopol'. Watching 'The White Tiger' it occurred to me; 'this is so Russian'. And for a retired tanker fond of tank porn there is plenty of tank porn to be had. Cheesy? Yes, Low budget? Yes, but like Kelly's Heroes' Tiger34s I appreciate the effort.

Siege of Sevastopol features a woman sniper credited with over 300 kills who was befriended by Eleanor Roosevelt during a tour of the US to convince us to open a 2d front. When Ms Roosevelt journeyed to the USSR to see Kruschev, and diverted to see her sniper friend her handlers complained about the diversion. Her reply that 'a gentleman should be pleased to wait for a lady to attend him' was point perfect.

I wonder how many of the much the absence of the aristocracy was related to many of them being involved in France and Belgium and either dead or POWs.

    3. Lets be honest, the RAF battle of Britain pilots were chock-full with Czechs, Poles, Australian, South African, New Zealanders, Canadians, Free French and many other countries including the USA. Most of them would not have tolerated the aristocratic pretensions that caused far too many ill-advised casualties. Perhaps that was why "the few" was so successful

    4. Okay, if we're going to be 'honest', without radar to get the pile-its up over Old Blighty in time to contest with Jerry inbound no one gives a flat tinker's damn what the nationality of the pile-its in the planes were. The few were so successful because Goering was an idiot. Highly decorated from WWI, but an idiot nonetheless. He stopped the assault on the radar sites, and sealed his doom.

      Delete
    5. Along with the radar sites, he stopped the attacks on the airdromes in favor of slagging cities. That would be a Shatnerian 'double dumbass'.

CIA chief: Intel leaks on the rise, cites leaker 'worship'

Maybe it's time for Americans to become Behavior Mod savvy? Perhaps concoct a unique Putin type cocktail to let these traitorous bastagges know that the American people will no longer accept the notion allowing domestic or foreign enemies to access shelter from indictment on foreign soil, and/or become an international mouthpiece for anti-American propaganda by U.S. enemies, declared or undeclared!

Furthermore, NO MORE free boob jobs or plumbing reassignment for pseudopsycho-Military offenders, just a simple firing squad for uniformed traitors--all weapons loaded, with Pre-Fire instructions to shoot the traitors balls off, if they got'em! All other convicted traitors will be allowed a leisurely 1/2 hour swim in the deep-end of the pool, with a submerged squadron of hungry Bull 'Gators, of course, ONLY in a local govt. and EPA approved, adults only theme park! Admission free to "I Voted" Americans on July 4th only!

Even better, maybe a Citizen sponsored National Contest to identify the BEST and WORST method to terminate traitors? (Rinos an 'Rats ineligible to participate, unless currently fleeing felons, or confirmed targets for federal, state or local prosecution).

UPDATE: Late last night I posted a short item about a CNN producer admitting on hidden camera that the Trump/Russia story was “bullshit” designed to “increase ratings”. It turns out that John Bonifield (the same producer caught on tape) is knee-deep in an ongoing libel lawsuit brought against CNN by a Florida pediatric surgeon who accuses the network of libel and wait for it…wait for it…also airing an ambush video. The court denied CNN’s motion to dismiss the case (the ambush video was not part of the claim) and the parties are apparently waging war about discovery.

    NOW THAT IS FUNNY!~~~
