Progressives and Their Tom Thumb's Blues

Taking a brief break from my duties as tour guide for our visiting Spanish guests. Took them yesterday over the mountains to visit the beautiful San Juan Capistrano Mission. I figured Spaniards would like to see a Spanish-built church. We had magnificent weather and a picturesque drive on a winding mountain road. They seemed to like it judging from the hundreds of pictures they took. California has a great and colorful history; it's future? Hmmm . . . maybe not so much.

Anyhow, the Diplowife has taken our guests on a shopping expedition, and I sit alone, supervising the washing machine as it churns away, and listening to Bob Dylan. I had forgotten how good he is. He deserved that Nobel prize. In particular I love his "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues." The music has a Leibner/Stoller "Smokey Joe's Cafe" feel, but the real magic is in the words. Dylan's use of words is akin to that in the poems of Gertrude Stein; he uses them more for their sound than their meaning to tell the story and set the mood. Jazz with words--and the harmonica is great. Brilliant stuff.
When you're lost in the rain in Juarez when it's Easter time, too/
And your gravity fails and negativity don't pull you through/
Don't put on any airs when you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there and they really make a mess outta you/
Now, if you see Saint Annie, please tell her thanks a lot/
I cannot move, my fingers are all in a knot/
I don't have the strength to get up and take another shot/
And my best friend, my doctor, won't even say what it is I've got.
Sweet Melinda, the peasants call her the goddess of gloom/
She speaks good English and she invites you up into her room/
And you're so kind and careful not to go to her too soon/
And she takes your voice and leaves you howling at the moon...
Gotta love Dylan's description of "Sweet Melinda." It got me thinking about the progressives and their collective melt-down over the past few days and weeks. President Trump has done something remarkable with his tweets, his speeches, his actions, and his general attitude, to wit, he's taken the progressives' voice and left them "howling at the moon."

President Trump has used words as much for setting the mood as for their actual definition. While the progressives try to parse and pick apart those words, the rest of us understand exactly what he's saying, how he's tapping into our own thoughts and letting them gush forth like a wildcat oil well.

He is leaving the progs "howling at the moon." They don't know what else to say about him, what other slanders and libels to heave in his direction, what more fake narratives and news to conjure up. Nothing seems to work. It all boomerangs.

If Trump can keep this up, he will go down as one of the great presidents. He is a revolutionary force. I am more than impressed.

  2. What Trump is doing is great and what he says about his agenda/policies is great. The question is what he says/tweets about himself/his enemies/his feuds.

Good part of Trump's incessant tweeting/off the cuff remarks re self/enemies/feuds:

Trump is keeping media distracted while his Cabinet appointees actually get loads done. Yesterday just when media uproar was settling down, and maybe some normalcy, Trump tweets the most contentious thing of all. So all the attention is back on him, with some people reasonably questioning his mental state. BUT is that the point? Is that a strategy? The rest of his Admin. is being left alone as media obsesses over latest remarks/tweets?

Who would have thunk we'd pull out of Paris without huge street riots by greenies? Yet we did. Pruit is cutting EPA's regs, coal is being mined, pipelines are being built, felon illegals are being deported, etc., etc. No riots, little attention on Cabinet members. That’s all terrific, and Trump is racking a huge number of things accomplished. The media attention on the tweets/off the cuff remarks about himself/feuds/enemies is allowing parts of his agenda to be accomplished without interference.

Bad part of Trumps incessant tweets/off the cuff remarks re himself/enemies/feuds:

The volume of tweets/remarks about his feuds, as opposed to his agenda, is creating uproar and chaos and are off putting to many, including Congressional GOP. He appears thin-skinned, petty, juvenile And there is something creepy about this thing with Mika and tweeting about bleeding face lifts. I hate tweets like the Mika ones. Beneath the dignity of a president, a bit whacko and totally distracting from good things announced I think that hurts Trump far more than Bzrezinski. Joe and Mika may be the creeps, but Trump's tweet puts him in the middle of creepiness. This was a week of wins. Trump turned it into a 5 day holiday weekend about him and his mental state. I don't think this is good.

Furthermore. he undercuts/contradicts people who speak on his behalf. Note that he no longer has many surrogates willing to speak for him. Who would, if you are going to be contradicted 10 minutes later? So people like Gringrich now appear to be willing to speak about him. I don't hear them speaking for him.

Also, as a lawyer, I think some of the tweets have created unnecessary legal problems. Take Rosenstein appointing Special Counsel. Rosenstein was willing to work with Trump, gave him the memo about Comey. Trump talks way too much - and sometimes imho, carelessly. He told conflicting stories about reason for firing and even contradicted Spicer. So Rosenstein found himself in line of fire, without any handle himself on what Trump had done, when and why. He got himself out of that line of fire as fast as he could. I don't blame him, and he's not a bad guy for doing so. I would have done the same. Rosenstein started a willing helper. Trump is now feuding with him in tweets. This is Trump,s, not Rosenstein's, fault. This one he totally did to himself.

    Where I come out:

90% of Trump's statements/tweets are great. Imo, 10% are horrendous unforced errors and put himself or staff/appointees in legal jeopardy and/or make him seem petty, juvenile, and in the latest one, even sort of creepy. I wish he could eliminate that 10%.I think, then, he would be great in every way.

    1. Mshr, good thoughts but get over that 10%. Everyone who voted for Trump... we all knew exactly what we were getting. (In fact you could argue that Trump has been THE most transparent candidate in modern American history. He didn’t pull an Obama or Clinton, pretending to be someone else just to fool voters). It's a little petty now to criticize Trump for being the guy we willingly voted in. I don't give a rat's @$$ for Congressional Republicrats who get the vapors over these tweets. Cowards like Ryan have no room to criticize when they did less than nothing in the Obama years. In fact, Ryan and his ilk will probably prove far more effective opposing Trump than Obama. Trump is the embodiment of hard core working class America that won't take $&!× from anyone. The Left is apopletic over the temerity of Trump to give it right back to them. Everyone who doesn't enjoy this fir with fire tactic doesn't understand just how close we are to the precipice.

You sort of make my point. Hard core supporters aren't fazed, probably even love all of it. But the rest of the world hates it. I hate it. But I like what he's doing enough and believe in his agenda/vision enough that I will remain a supporter. Others won't. How is it beneficial for Trump to lose many people who can't get beyond the strangeness and chaos of so much incessant tweeting feuds? The point is to add support, not turn off support. The hardcore base will be with him without those tweets. It isn't as if he needs to do it to keep his base. He needs more than his base and I think the volume and content of the tweets I'm objecting to lose, not gain , other supporters. The bleeding face lift truly verges on outright creepy, regardless of what Mika/Joe have done. The base loves it, is egging him on - and losing him lots of other support. The point isn't to thrill his already-committed base, but to have enough support to win. Also, the jeopardy he keeps creating for himself. Now we may have another line of investigation: did he engage in some sort of extortion with respect to National Enquirer story? I'm sure he won't listen to his lawyers, but will end up tweeting a bunch about that - and tweet his way straight into an extortion charge, just as he tweeted/talked his way into Rosenstein appointing Special Counsel.

The point of my writing my view on this is to say to those like you who are loving the show, that no, you're wrong, you're not thinking beyond your own thrill at watching the pyrotechnics. You love it and he gets that feedback from you, so gleefully he continues. I think you guys are desperately wrong and I wish he wasn't getting any positive feed back. Then he might stop.I understand exactly how close we are to the precipice. I want Trump to survive to save us from going over it.

Don't you Msher, take into consideration that the appointment of a Special Counsel - given all the innuendo, Hillary's guerrilla campaigning (Manafort recall was working his alleged Russian angles while collecting his checks from the Podesta Group) ... the IC along with the peculiar timing and content of Obama's Executive Order #12333 (Dessimination of Raw SIGINT) which, effectively, opened the floodgates for all the citations in the MSM based on "Sources familiar with but [statutorily] prohibited from speaking on the record ... 6. Well, Mshr, could you be wrong about that support? I submit that voters like you will not abandon Trump in 2020 vs any hypothetical Leftist thug the Donks put forward. Otherwise you would have voted for Felonious von Pantsuit in 2016 (hat tip Schlicter). You now occupy the position that we deplorables had for the last elections since Reagan, being told by our GOP betters to hold our nose and vote for the heir designate or be complicit in another Donk victory. So, no, I don’t think you or any, other serious American is going to vote Donk in 2020, especially not due to tweets slamming the Lefty media.

My support for President Trump's tweets is rooted mainly in what I believe is (sadly) necessary to defeat these monsters of postmodern neo-marxism. I don't believe there are all that many people like you who are so offended by the tweets that Trump needs to moderate. Moderation is what the Left interprets as weakness and surrender.

I will concede, however, that if the Left underwent some sort of Damascus revelation and started acting like journalists, then it would behoove Trump to de-escalate accordingly. UNeil then, damn the torpedoes, so to speak.

  4. Living in Australia, I've never seen or heard of the two media people he attacked via Twitter. On the surface of it, his Tweet seemed a bit crass, a bit "beneath his office", but looking at comments throughout the internet, it seems a lot of people endorse what he said, and equally vilify those two people. So maybe they needed to be cut down a little. Anyway, he is certainly stirring the pot.

    6. Scott, no offence taken at all. I deleted my posts because I was uncomfortable with detailing my firearm ownership in a public forum that can be read worldwide.
The perception that firearms are banned here is completely wrong.
I'll just re-iterate that, since the gun buy-back following that appalling massacre in Tasmania all those years ago, there are more legally owned firearms in the hands of good, honest citizens than ever before, including mine. I'm very comfortable with our gun laws.

    8. @Stephen- I sure hope for your sake you never have to actually use any of those "legally owned" firearms to save your life or the lives of your family.

If you should have to do so (which would be difficult, unless you know an attack is coming, due to the "safety" regulations included in your gun laws) then you can expect no mercy from the enlightened authorities.

You will be lucky if you escape gaol, and luckier yet if the miscreant you were forced to shoot doesn't live to collect all your property and your life's savings in his lawsuit against you.

I lived for 30 years in Australia; it is a magnificent country, but sadly its inhabitants are not permitted to defend themselves against lawbreakers. Merely being able to possess a firearm counts for little, if you aren't allowed to use it.

    1. That's a theory I wrote above. Whenever things die down and maybe there might be some reporting on what he's getting done, which is a lot, he sends out a tweet and the conversation/reporting is about the tweet. Is he doing that so his Cabinet people can implement change without riots and disruptions? A good example is his pulling out of Paris Accord. I expected riots in the streets, protests everywhere. There was virtually nothing - because media focused on whatever he had just done re Comey/investigations. Yesterday's tweet re bleeding face lift - absolutely assured to be center of media attention. Travel ban implemented smoothly with little drama. Was that purpose of that, er, unusual tweet?

This might be a very effective strategy in one way. But imho, it also diminishes and damages him greatly. Congressional GOP to the extent they had good intentions, certainly understandably have problem aligning themselves too closely with seemingly unhinged tweeting mania. I think he could distract, if he really thinks that's a good idea, with less chaos for his staff and damage to himself.

  20. I still like my idea. It could be constructed as a gigantic work of art. It would create lots of jobs as it would need millions of bricks. The border guards could drive along the top picking off the Mexicans. What's not to like?
