There. Have I got the official narrative right? I don't want to offend anybody or put any group into a defensive posture . . .
Let me ask a couple or so questions, however, while we search for the motive and debate whether he was or was not a "lone wolf": What was he doing in the USA? Why was he here? Why do we let these "folks" into our country?
Won't make any difference if we build a wall if we let them in via JFK. I think we have plenty of kooks and killers produced at home without having to import more . . . I don't want to seem isolationist or protectionist, but . . .
Time to get serious . . . unless that offends, of course . . . if it does, well, we can always break out the Teddy bears, flowers, and candles, and darken a couple of buildings for a day or two . . . that might do it.

It's the opposite of reassuring to be told that a jihad-motivated attacker was a lone wolf. Lone wolves are much harder to stop, and the next one could be anyone who has a religious commitment to mainline Sunni/Shia versions of jihad. Every Muslim in and immigrating to the US should become a Quranist or other kind of Muslim that rejects the legitimacy and authority of the "Sayings" ("ahadith"), with their commands to kill apostates, reformers, gays, etc.

This latest terrorist was in the USA seven years, which means, I fear, that he was radicalized after he arrived on a legal visa. And that means extreme vetting doesn't work, I'm afraid. If I am right, and this is certainly not the first example of a terrorist being inspired to kill and turned loose after arriving in the USA (think San Bernardino, for example), we need to think about infiltrating mosques. That is not likely to be accepted by civil libertarians, the ACLU, or the Democratic party. So we're left to harbor enemies in our midst. Not a good situation.
ReplyDeleteHe arrived on a Diversity Visa, one of my least favorite visa categories. I processed them in Montreal (great city) where the vast majority were from other countries, generally poorly educated and low skilled. Just the kinds of immigrants the US needs (along with the many other poorly educated and low skilled "family reunification" visa applicants from a multitude of countries around the globe). I agree with F, infiltrating mosques is not going to go over well. Needs to be done, however, along with oh, how about STOP LETTING THEM IN!!! Nothing like immigration issues linked to terrorism to get my dander up. I wholeheartedly support an approach similar to what Canada and Australia do -- merit based immigration, scrap the whole stupid family reunification thing. Family reunification doesn't mean exporting an entire village from the Philippines or China to Daly City or San Francisco. Is my bias showing? :) Sad to say, on the Islamic front....we ARE in a war - not just abroad but here at home - and most of our politicians refuse to admit it.

The argument against this will be, what about the Western concept of religious freedom ? Well, Islam should be redefined,it is sailing under false flag, it is not a religion but a political ideology, preaching intolerance, oppression,violence even murder. It certainly takes a political superman/woman to make such a move. Maybe there are no such leaders in the West anymore.Trump would probably like to do it but will not be allowed. Some of the east-Europeans, like Hungarian Victor Orban, might have what it takes.

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry, SL, but as serious as all this is, I can't help seeing a barcode under that mop of tousled hair, just above those crazy eyes. Nah, I would not climb in with him either. My misspent youth, working in some of the finest loony bins in Texas, has rather sensitized me to craziness. While young Lewis was off negotiating World Peace or Whirled Peas, or some delectable combination thereof, but always with No Feathers, I was honing my own diplomatic skills, learning to persuade Crazy Eyes or one of his relatives not to kill young Michael or my female co-worker.

ReplyDeleteBack in 1965, Ted Kennedy promised the nation that the change in the immigration laws wouldn't change the country's demographics. He also pushed the diversity visa lottery when he saw that (a) the Irish, Ashkenazi Jewish, and Italian ghettos that built the urban Democratic Party were not being replenishe; (b) the trickle of Poles still immigrating tended to be fiercely anti-Communist, Catholic, and hence open to the Republicans; and (c) too many first-generation people from the Far East, when naturalized, voted for the Party they saw as tougher on Communism and friendlier to business.
