Apologies to my Chinese friends for culturally appropriating the "Year of" term, but rarely has one person so dominated the news and the obsessions of both us ordinary folk and the bien pensants as has President Donald Trump.
The global media, both legacy and "social," were chock-full of stories, commentaries, and debates about, over, and full-of-loathing for Trump and what he means to America and the world. Is there a person anywhere on the planet who does not have an opinion on President Trump? The President has to be the most loved and hated person on the planet. I also think he is on the verge of becoming one of our truly great presidents, the greatest in my lifetime, at least. Let me 'splain.
As regular readers of this inconsequential blog know, its inconsequential author thinks President Obama was an eight-year nightmare that was orders of magnitude worse than our previous worst nightmare, Jimmy Carter. I, frankly, came to despair that we would ever awaken from and escape that crushing Obamista incubus. Then, of course, a November miracle; in that month in 2016, despite the polls and the sneers of the MSM and Hollywood, despite the fabulously financed Democrat Party machine, and an epidemic of fake news and phony "dossiers," the most improbable thing happened: brash, loud and bold non-politician Trump won the election. He ran what was, in essence, the only successful third-party candidacy in the long history of our Republic since, perhaps, Lincoln. The GOP leadership was as befuddled by the Trump phenomenon as was that of the DNC. As we have commented on in this humble blog, that event led to the greatest meltdown of the left since, since . . . well, I don't know since when. His election revealed the leftist rot in the US and global elites that many of us had long suspected and perhaps commented on, but had not realized the full extent.
The resistance to Trump's nomination and election started with prominent Republicans, such as Romney and the Bush clan, and continued with brave talk of riots in the street, "pussy hats," vote recounts, electoral college challenges, Russian "collusion" investigations, and ended with ISIS on the run, US oil production roaring along, a new tax scheme, thousands of regulations slashed, the economy booming, Hollywood in a tailspin, Jerusalem recognized as the capital of Israel, illegal alien criminals rounded up, UN budget cuts, a teetering EU, riots in Tehran, the "deep state" exposed, the Supreme Court turned around, the Maduro regime on the ropes, and lefties fighting over first class seats on United Airlines (BTW: I know the "teacher" who got booted from her first-class seat by that whacky leftist Congresswoman; she's a hard-core leftist "activist" who made my life and career very difficult many years ago. Lefties like to travel first class.)
Things are good, pretty good. Well, at least, much better than they were one-year ago. I feel optimistic about the coming year. I am not by nature an optimist, so I say that with some trepidation.
Happy New Year.
(gōng hè xīn xǐ): May you have a Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteDear Diplomad,
ReplyDeleteIt has been a FABULOUS year!
But 2018 is going to be crucial. The Republicans must continue to be the majority in both the House and the Senate, or the minions of Sauron will completely block POTUS and ultimately remove him from office. Our Republic will never recover from that disaster.
I just hope that POTUS has taught the Republicans to fight, instead of rolling over and showing their bellies.
Happy New Year and wishes of health and joy to you and Diplowife.
Happy New Year, Sir!
ReplyDeleteHopefully the tidal wave continues to sweep the leftist rot down the sewer pipe of history. (Ash heap just didn't fit with "tidal wave.")
Happy new year, Dip!
ReplyDeleteYou neglected to mention all the perv outings that unmasked dozens of sanctimonious mostly-liberals for their hypocritical lifestyles ... along with all their elite enablers. To paraphrase that long-gone attorney Welch, "After all, you prog prigs, have you no shame?"
ReplyDeleteWe will have to see what happens. I like the fact that the last democrat elected immediately lined up behind trump. Was interesting to say the least.
ReplyDeleteIt is looking more like the chinese curse the further we move into the trump era.
Super!
ReplyDeleteSo many things in life are decided before everyone who is impacted by those decisions fully understand what happened. I think the U.S. is toast. I could make a legitimate argument to prove it was a conspiracy that would tie in foreign powers, useful idiots here at home and the vast majority of voters who are simply unwoke to what is going on. It may not seem that we are "toast", but in fact we are in the middle of a massive invasion that will change the U.S. forever. No, I don't mean simply that there will be culture clashes and language differences. I mean they intend to take over the country and it will not be pretty. Every (well almost every) immigrant legal and illegal gets massive welfare that the common citizen pays for. This hunger for free stuff is insatiable and will continue to require more and more taxes and regulations until they extract your last dollar and your last right to satisfy it. Then the whole thing will fall apart when the free stuff golden goose is dead. The assault on our borders and ports of entry is relentless and it is a cumulative geometric kind of thing. California is the canary in the coal mine, it is lost and going under fast. Other blue states are to be next. The great American dream is over to be replaced by the great American nightmare. Keep your hand on your wallet, watch your state legislators. The Trump revolution has slowed the inevitable but that is all it has done. The Trump election was a wild card, he won but more because of Hillary's failure than it is because of Trump or the right strength. As we speak the left is rallying their forces. They intend to win and they will win.
ReplyDeleteBasically, I agree... Yet, I think you're only covering the high points. The moral rot has devastated this country more than anything, skewing the reasoning powers of a large segment of the population. Even when we know we are headed down the tubes, we won't care and then we'll be overtaken by justice. Life really is fair.
DeleteI yelled at the TV again today.
ReplyDeleteDennis Ross was opining on CNN about Iran. He thought that the Obama administration should have spoken sooner in support of the Green Revolution in 2009, and, the Trump words were a _bit_ more forceful and timely.
"Trump didn't send Iran billions in cash to the Tyrants, afterwards", I shouted... and some other bad words indicating my wishes for Ross to be transported to the Hot Place for re-education at the end of a pitchfork.
Happy New Year!
Guatemalan here.
ReplyDeleteI guess the "teacher" activist made your life difficult while you were here. She is still revered by some of the fossil left here.
I would love to hear your story about her.
Happy new year!
Can you imagine how the world might change since Saudi Arabia has stopped supporting Wahhabi terrorists and now if the Greens are successful and Iran's leadership changed so they stopped supporting Hezbollah? That would really make 2018 historic! A worldwide peace begins? Trump's many tours and meetings with world leaders bears such fruit? Totally stunning possibilities in the Middle East! Anyone else wondering about this?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!

Happy New Year, sir!

Engage them more closely!
ReplyDeleteI'm not always thrilled with what Donald Trump does as president, but I've not stopped waking each day and thanking God that Hillary Clinton is NOT president.
ReplyDeleteTruer words were never spoken!

Happy New Year, Diplomad & Mrs! May you both have a wonderful New Year, and may our country as well!
ReplyDeleteYour comments on the activist "teacher" who ran afowl of Queen Meanie Shiela Jackass Lee added enjoyment to that encounter. It's just a pity they couldn't both have lost the seat!
Heh heh heh

The best evidence that the absurd oaf has some political merit is perhaps the identity of his enemies.

ReplyDeleteand boy would I like to hear that story about "the teacher"

Woot!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Ross Perot, had he not had a meltdown in 1992, might have been elected and would have had a similar battle with the left but the Administrative State was not as entrenched as it is now.
ReplyDeleteMeltdown or not, Ross Perot never would have won.
DeleteWhat he did accomplish, thanks to his splitting of the sensible vote, was the electiion of Bill Clinton. And look at what that led to over the years. You can thank Perot for Hillary.
George H.W. Bush might be considered a milquetoast by some, but he did manage to successfully navigate us through the collapse of the Soviet empire, Tiananmen Square (which led to the renunciation of communism in deed, if not name, in China) and Gulf War I, three fairly significant postwar crises.
If Bush 41 had been reelected, who knows where things might have gone? The future is always determined by the past. But 16 years of continuous Republican power might have continued the Reagan revolution long into the future...not to mention prevented the ultimate rise of a certain despicable, messianic Illinois politician.
I have to say, Trump's 2017 has delivered on liberal-cranial-liberation celebrations throughout the entirety of the year. Yeah, there's been much more important things at work, but watching the heads exploding has been entertaining.
ReplyDeleteAnd look how thoroughly he's distracted them with their own echo chamber: "Oh look! Trump tried to nix Obamacare, but he FAILED! See that everybody!! See that! He failed to get of Obamacare!"
"And check this out, I did this wicked-burn standup opening to my late night show where I pointed out how Trump failed to pass any tax reform.. he knows I totally beat him!!!"
"And we got our judged to stuff him in the face on immigration controls!! Boo yeah!"
And what did we get in December? Obamacare gone, taxes massively overhauled, a ban on immigration from non-compliant countries... and even with the backing of the RINOs.
It may not *look* like leadership, but in my experience, the best leadership never does.

ReplyDeleteI have looked at the USA for many years as an outsider and have long considered that the Republican attachment to the anti-abortion/Christian mantra is detrimental to their ultimate political system of capitalism and freedom. As long as the GOP cling to these secondary considerations as though they were inviolable then the socialists will continue to pick them off in the polls. Is America finished? Not yet. It still has time to watch the fall of Western civilisation in Western Europe as it crumbles under Islam into, I believe, bloody civil war and genocide. Will the USA react in time? Perhaps. Thank you for your thoughtful observations from the inside.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read about her background, I wondered if you knew her...
