Killing Atticus Finch

Hard to keep up with the Progs. They are so clever and slippery! "We have always been at war with Eastasia," and all that.

To Kill A Mockingbird.  In my youth we all had to read Harper Lee's novel about the town of Macomb, Alabama circa 1932 and, of course, its prominent lawyer, Atticus Finch. Unlike a lot of stuff we had to read, this was actually pretty good; in fact, I'd say that Lee's 1960 novel is probably one of the great American novels of the post-WWII period. No matter what your politics, or your view of the American South, Jim Crow, and the civil rights movement, I hope you would agree that it is a beautifully written book, full of characters that we care about.

I, furthermore, would add that the 1962 film, directed by the late Robert Mulligan, is probably at least equal to the novel, and one of the best films ever made. Sure, it came out of the prevailing liberal ethos of the time, but it is a powerful story about family values, prejudice, and courage, especially that of Atticus Finch who takes on the unenviable task of defending a black farm worker against the charge that he raped a white woman. The novel, at least partly inspired by the real-life 1931 Scottsboro Boys case, looks at how justice gets perverted and an obviously innocent man gets convicted and sent to jail, where he subsequently dies "trying to escape."

Well, I guess we poor benighted conservatives who favored the civil rights movement, admired Martin Luther King, Jr., and felt that lynchings were wrong, well, we were wrong. You see the Progs have now Awoken us to the fact that we "must believe all women." So I guess the Scottsboro Boys were guilty, after all, as were the scores of black men who were hanged from trees by mobs enraged by stories of rape or of "disrespect" towards white women, including, of course, 14 year-old Emmet Till lynched in 1955 for offending a white woman in Mississippi.

It's time to remove To Kill a Mockingbird from bookstores, libraries, movie theaters, and streaming services. Harper Lee's name--a woman no less!--must be erased from our history for portraying sympathetically a white patriarch who defended a rapist and cast doubt on a woman's accusations.

Atticus Finch, R.I.P.

    Talk about strange praise.

  2. Funny thing is that to me the whole, real story was about Boo Radley, and how important to our lives "shy" people are, and how the oddest people can be the best neighbors we would ever hope to have.

A couple of months ago, the American Library Association erased Laura Ingalls Wilder from their award coffers. They claimed it was because she used "racist" language, but I think it was because she loved her Pa. All of her books are a celebration of what a real loving father is like - including being away for months working and being revered for it, not sneered at like the "single mother" feminists do today.

And if To Kill A Mockingbird disappears, it will also be in part because Scout loved her widowed father, and both she and Jem seemed to have recovered completely from their mother's death, to the point that even *we* do not notice her complete absence from the story.

I know they couldn't find a single supposed witness who was willing to say it was not BS, but there was supposed to be someone who says they heard a rumor that it happened inside of a few weeks of it happening.

That the person who claims to have heard a rumor about it at the time is willing to stand behind the claim WOULD make it more credible than the prior accusation, though that's not to be confused with "credible."

  5. Thinking about the pickle Judge K is in made me wonder how he could have fooled all those people along the way. Because what the Democrats are telling us is that Brett Kavanaugh is not what he appears to be; an exemplary member of the community, a carefully considered constitutional scholar, a widely respected judge - NO! Brett Kavanaugh is a monster. It's not that his views on abortion are wrong, he's a rapist. This is what the Democrats want America to believe. Every single person who ever interacted with Brett Kavanaugh in multiple academic and professional settings was fooled by this elitist, white privileged, member of the oppressive patriarchy.

People act differently when in the office and sober, as opposed to drunk at a party. You never noticed?

  6. I agree that Ramirez is more credible, but that's mostly because she said "I was drunk, there are gaps in my memory, and I am not even certain that the person who exposed himself to me was Brett Kavinaugh."

There is absolutely nothing credible in the Ford allegations. The incident supposedly happened in the middle of summer, but "everybody was talking about it the next week at school." Every person (including a lifelong friend who "believes her") whom Ford claimed was there denied that the party she described ever happened.

Regardless of the outcome, I hope this serves as a lesson to young people (in particular Judge Kavanaugh's daughters) about the dangers of alcohol putting one in a situation one will later regret (but of course, it won't). In the "social media" era of chronicling one's life in excessive detail, I fear that events from the distant past haunting political appointees will become increasingly common.

The second one isn't certain Kavanaugh as involved. The most recent one would have us believe that Kavanaugh was slipping drugs in drinks to underage women and no one ever reported on it.

However, the main motivation for posting is I find The Diplomad's non-mention of the Central Park Five particularly enlightening. As far as I can tell, this is one case where Trump was resolute in his determination to punish the suspects, even after they were exonerated by the DNA-supported confession of another man. So, Trump is the anti-Finch?

The D.A.'s report was based solely on the confession of Matias Reyes, career criminal, serial rapist and murderer. Reyes had absolutely nothing to lose by confessing to the rape -- the statute of limitations had run -- and much to gain by claiming he acted alone: He got a favorable prison transfer and the admiration of his fellow inmates for smearing the police.

While dumping on the police for screwing up the investigation, Morgenthau wouldn't let the cops interview Reyes themselves, despite the fact that his "confession" constituted the sole evidence that he raped and brutalized the jogger by himself.

Not only were the police prohibited from interviewing Reyes or giving him a polygraph, but Morgenthau ordered other inmates not to talk to any police investigators about their conversations with Reyes. First the D.A. slimed the cops, then he ran interference for a rapist-murderer.

New York journalist Nicholas Stix reports that one inmate says Reyes told him he heard the jogger's screams and raped her only after the "Central Park Five" had finished with her.

The media proclaim those five rapists innocent based on journalists' own over-excited reports that the DNA found on the jogger matched that of Reyes -- but none of the others!

Yeah, we knew that. It was always known that semen on the jogger did not match any of the defendants. ("DNA Expert: No Semen Links to Defendants," The Associated Press, July 14, 1990.)

Hallmark should have a greeting card: "Guess whose semen wasn't found anywhere on the rape victim?" (Open card) "I'm so proud of you, son!"

Prosecutor Elizabeth Lederer expressly reminded the jurors of the missing rapist in her summation to the jury: "Others who were not caught raped her and got away." Reyes' confession means nothing more than: Now we know who "got away."

    3. from Aesop:

The "Southern Strategy" is a historical unicorn.
      It never happened.

In 1968, the South went for George Wallace over Kennedy-then-Humphrey. No shocker there.

In 1972, they rejected commie McGovern, and there was no third choice.

And the black vote swung from Republicans (MLK was one, btw) to Democrats from 1932 onwards, when they decided to stop working for a living, and started voting for a living, a policy that was 'roided up massively by LBJ on purpose in the 1960s, not by Nixon.

Nice try, and -50 points from Slytherin for trying to pass such a ham-fisted trope of historical revisionism off as historical fact.

I'm guessing Brett Kavanaugh date-raped yer mom too, right?

    4. In 1968, the South went for George Wallace over Kennedy-then-Humphrey.

I am sure Tennesee, the two Carolinas, and Virginia would be surprised to find out they were not part of the South.

Also, you seem to be confused about "a strategy" and "a successful strategy", not all strategies work out.

... when they decided to stop working for a living,...

It would be a shame to let this thread pass without showing off the ugly racism everyone claims the Republicans don't have.

Since I'm older than Kavanaugh, I would think not. However, thank you for also showing off the misogyny of belittling the trauma of attempted rape, that Republicans supposedly don't have. Go for the trifecta and insult my sexual orientation.

    5. Unfortunately I cannot be privy to the details of this case, so I can't really comment on whether they seem reasonable to be true. I do believe that the value of fraternities have been destroyed by hollywood's portrayal of them as debaucheries. Unfortunately, the system seems to have followed the lead of 'our betters' in hollywood, rather than the other way around.
There is certainly at least one claim against Kavanaugh which can be summarily discounted. I didn't read it, but I saw a headline saying "woman says boyfriend told her about a group including Kavanaugh doing.." yeah... it's surprising that would make print.
imo, Feinstein is 'the best of the liberals' (low bar), and having a working relationship with her would've meant knowing about this very early, he allowing for a change of direction.
I don't exclude the possibility that this is 'all ginned up', it's just, we've had so many good conservative appointees without this kind of brouhaha.
If they'd ginned this all up just to get another conservative justice onto the court... Is it possible that all future conservative scotus nominees will be smeared with such allegations via an organized conspiracy? It would certainly be a new one to me, but if it might get Hillary into the white house, I'm sure she'd fund it, no matter how low it has to go. :)

Why is the GOP losing this game?

This particular trial, and the generally depressing display around the Kavanaugh nomination, is similar to what happened to Cosby, Franken, Weinstein, etc. Men who behave this way tend to do it repeatedly, and when one person comes forth, it gives courage to others to come forth. There is no intelligence game going on here, just people feeling free to speak what they have kept hidden for a while.

We know Kavanaugh lied about the drinking age in Maryland (it was raised to 21 when he was 17). We saw his performance yesterday, the sort of anger people get when they feel they are denied what belongs to them. He even sneered at and interrupted female senators (never the male ones, of course). He pretty obviously acts as if women should be subservient to men. Remembering the culture of the 1980s (I'm not sure if you do), he would have completely bought into the notion that boys were supposed to take whatever favors they could from girls. He's not innocent, and not repentant.

I will make no further attempts to disrupt your naivete, though. Instead, I will be amused as you continue to claim that the Democrats would go to all this trouble for such an obviously lost cause. Everyone needs to justify their beliefs somehow.

  18. To Kill a Mockingbird is a lie; an alternate fiction of a real event in Ohio when three black men were caught raping a white woman after murdering her boyfriend. The local authorities dragged their heels and even threatened to release them. That's when the locals descended on the jail and held their own trial with the entire town watching. They determined that 2 of the blacks were guilty, and the third - while he was "in" on the crime initially - backed out, and was found "not guilty".

The two guilty were summarily hanged.

It's a remarkable instance in which local justice is swift when conducted by a civil populace, as opposed to the barbaric legal system we have today where "officialdom" cherry-picks its facts, censors most of it in secret and byzantine court proceedings, and insists the fallacious chant that "Letting a hundred guilty people go is better than condemning one innocent" - a "right" that has absolutely NO basis in the Constitution.

The "mob" in the real-life basis for "To Kill a Mockingbird" gave exactly the "due process" the Founders intended as prescribed in the Constitution, a just, public and speedy trial, rather than a corrupt and drawn out one that average citizens cannot understand.

It is PRECISELY this reason why Harper Lee invented the fable of "To Kill a Mockingbird".

The truth was too destructive to his "narrative".
