Making Weird be OK

I love the 4th of July. It's my favorite holiday. I loved it when I was overseas, and we had our 4th reception. In all the countries where I served, the US Embassy reception for the 4th was the hottest and most prestigious ticket in town. Those invited showed up. And, I must say, we had excellent receptions, ones which put to shame the national day parties of other embassies. In Indonesia, for example, we got all the US corporations in the country to contribute either money or products: we had stands from McDonalds, Starbucks, Jack Daniels, KFC, etc. It was quite something.

Not even the lefties can ruin completely the 4th for me. They've tried. The latest? The controversy over the Betsy Ross flag. What utter rubbish! I did what I always do in such cases: I went out and bought two Betsy Ross flags, one in a frame for inside the house, and another to hang out front--I also bought another handgun.

The Dem candidates and their media enablers, of course, formed a major portion of the effort to destroy the 4th. I loved how Trump trolled them! He orchestrated a great 4th of July party on the DC Mall. He summoned: Tanks! Fighters! Bombers! The lefties went nuts! One unhinged commentator even compared the presence of a couple of tanks near the Lincoln Memorial as akin to Tianaman Square! The tanks would crush the resistance! It was a coup! Trump was making the 4th about himself! He would glorify the military! He would give a campaign speech! He would call for a return to slavery! Oh the humanity! Oh, the horror!

He, instead, gave a very nice, patriotic, and uplifting address (text here). Glorifying the military? How did we get and keep our Independence if not for the military and those willing--mostly men--to take up arms? Seems to me that this holiday is very much about the military and guns and the people willing to bear them in defense of the nation. The bazillion accomplishments of America would not have been possible without them.

My complaint right now is not with our odious women's soccer team (yawn), or Antifa, or Hollywood's elimination of straight white men from the screen, or CNN and its fake news. No. It's how all of the "progressive" forces come together to normalize the weird, to make it so that the aberrant must be accepted and even heartily endorsed.

I doubt that the lunatic Dems will win 2020. All that open borders, open wallet to the world, y'all come over crap is not going to fly. Not this time. This time, no . . . but, the progs play the long con. As I noted a long time ago, they change the meanings of words, so that the most basic units of thought and expression no longer mean what we once thought they did. We can't even use good old-fashion pronouns. As per Orwell, they rewrite the dictionary, they make us hesitate when we think and speak, we must not give "offense" or reveal ourselves as "racist, homophobic, misogynistic" throw backs to a dark era.  They use fake bought and paid for "science" to convince us to give up our standard of living, to question whether labels such as "male" and "female" have any meaning. They tear down flags, statues, and monuments; they want place names changed to erase our history. They deliberately blur the distinction between citizen and non-citizen, between legal and illegal residents in our country. They want open borders; they, in sum, want a destruction of this country, and of Western civilization.

As noted above, they will lose this time, but the lunatic left knows how to introduce the weirdest ideas and schemes, and gradually work them into the realm of acceptance. Look back just a few years and you will see what I mean. Just to take one issue, the progs will insist that soon, very soon we, for example, will all be forced not only to tolerate illegal aliens in our midsts, but to see them as a blessing, as something to be desired and happily funded. Much as we all now must accept and endorse the bizarre pseudoscience claims of fluid gender identity, we will accept and endorse the claims of "fluid" citizenship.

Not a cheery thought as we celebrate our independence.

  1. To celebrate the Fourth (and contribute to global warming) I stepped out on the back patio with my 10 gauge Black Powder
double bbl. I live out in the country so plenty safe. A ten gauge report is VERY loud and there's an impressive cloud of
gunsmoke pollution. Made me realize that the Founding Fathers
were not only slave owning bastards, but they were actively bringing on Global Warming with all that gunsmoke required just for political advantage! How selfish! When my shoulder gave out, I reckoned I had joined them in bringing doom a little quicker to the world. But was it ever fun!

    1. I very much wanted to do a similar thing- I have a Colt Walker black powder pistol, which I've fired before without the bullet, using only a small piece of cigarette paper to hold in the powder, along with some lube- but since I'm now living in California I decided against it.

They're so anti-gun here it just wasn't worth taking the chance; I didn't want to spend the long weekend in the hoosegow, which may well have happened in this once- Golden State. It's now more of a S**t Brown State, sadly!

  2. Americans (as defined in the 1950's through Clinton) are collapsing demographically due to a disinterest in children and/or life in general. imo, it's a spiritual collapse with progressivism as a symptom, rather than a cause.
The combination of broken families and material excess drain meaning from the lives of kids who never grow up.
They did it to themselves among generations, and instead of accepting that we've screwed up and making amends and pushing forward, progressives seek solace in government institutions.
Their parents cast them into the ocean... so they latch on to any driftwood that happens to come by... they understandably feel like they need to "fix it so what happened to them will never happen again".. which means... parents 'have to go'.... the concept of family 'has to go'

Speaking of pseudo-science, Hawaii banned oxybenzone by citing the report of an lefty activist who poured oxybenzone into containers of coral in ever increasing concentrations until the coral died. The parameter space was about 6 orders of magnitude in difference, in which just about any chemical will kill just about anything. But it was all they needed to feel good about "doing something for the oceans". Totally... completely... ridiculous.

  4. G'day Dip,

A belated Happy 4th of July "cousins".

Our local news showed the 4th July rally. Impressive. The Donald knows how to stick it to the opposition.

I have a Betsy Ross flag among the memorabilia gathered on one of my trips to the US.

Tell us the new handgun is something out of the ordinary - say a Webley .455 revolver or similar

    1. I'd love a Webley. I have a knock-off I got in Pakistan which was locally manufactured by tribesmen in Dara. I have never dared to shoot it. No. This latest gun is nothing exotic. I got my wife a .38 Special S&W snub nose revolver. A good gun to have in the desk drawer or in your purse. It only carries five rounds, but you know that all five will fire.

    2. I had a 455 Webley pistol back in my misspent youth.
It had an awful reputation for jams. I never had one with handloads. It was a great pistol. simple and robust.

    5. I also have the 642 airweight, bought years ago as an ankle gun. I call it the "noisy cricket", as it's very small, and is louder than any other pistol I own...

    6. "Just about" 50 years ago (I know I was either 14 or 15) Dad bought "a few" S&W Model 40s (.38) on one of our many trips to Little Rock - my Dad WWII & Korea going to Med School after the latter just in time Nam was heating up real good and sometimes the Little Rock VA would call him up and "ask him" might you come here for a week or so?

In the Gun-store Dad says, "Pick one out and when you turn 18 it'll be yours." Dad having this thing about young teenagers and handguns (Yeah and I did the same when I became parent to teens - figuring ... 'Well I see what this is doing to my car insurance rates' ... whether my Dad was making the exact same calculations I haven't a clue) Dad did 'gift me' an M-1 carbine at age 10 so I wouldn't, I guess 'feel left out' come time for deer-camp. ((That will be a story for another day 'cause it's still kinda embarrassing whenever my remaining cousins bring it up during family reunions. Involved "If you get lost fire three shots in the air then wait twenty minutes and fire three more." But since to my dismay I didn't get rescued I figured, "Mebbe I better hold onto some ammo 'cause Cousin 'Phil' did tell me about the bears. And the panthers."

Well I guess I done told that one on myself so another day turns out to be today.

Anyway getting back to that Model 40 I picked out; Yep you guessed it - nickel plated with the exteriors Turtle-Waxed so anybody within sight of it had to wear welders goggles just to look in its direction. At night.

Then, I'm in my mid-20s home on leave and me an' my pals are out exploring the farm in the '52 Chevy dump-truck Dad'd "taught me how to drive with" (meaning: he threw me the keys and sez, 'you figure it out') Anyway we came upon the sight of a coyote harassing one of our calves.

About a hundred yards off - I know I know I know what is the 'accepted wisdom' where hillbillies and shootin' anything is concerned but my fellow Diplomad Readers I'm pretty sure I can temper your disbelief by the simple expedient of saying Nobody Was More Surprise Than Me.

I did aim 'dead on' admitting I was elevating something like the USS Whatever battleship was firing at Iwo Jima but by gosh and by damn the coyote fell where it stood.

My pals were amazed at "my shooting ability" and fortunately one of them lived long enough to tell my nephew who's now one of Arkansas' SRT "shootists" and he's given to, bless his cotton socks, whenever I'm around he and his team, telling the story.

God bless my Dad. God bless Smith & Wesson.

    8. Thanks OW,

First time I ever admitted anywheres that was the doggonedest "luckiest shot" I ever did.

The bit betwixt the 'doggonedest' and the 'I' being in quotes and italicized is because after my mid-20s self left 'the proof' so to show-off, my Dad insisted I be responsible for whatever I caused [shot].

That was ... umm ... an unsavory olfactorily-speaking, unpleasant task.

      Good learnin' though.

      Amen

  6. Happy Fourth. While I see others full of gloom-and-doom, I took heart when the Hon. Se. Cruz of Texas schooled Colin Kaputtnik (or Kaernick, or whatever--and no insult intended towards Dave Berg's marvelous creation named Roger Kaputtnik) on how Betsy Ross, as a Quaker, was probably more anti-slavery than Kaputtnik could ever be. As for the US Women's Soccer Team, I am now officially aware of its existence, and still could probably care less about how much it's paid (except that I believe that all in professional sports are obscenely overpaid).

I'm old enough to remember when every campus progressive forerunner of today's SJW's would wear a Mao button and declare that Mao had perfected participatory democracy, found a "third way" for poorer nations to develop, and brought enlightenment and progress to all of China. They'd beat you up if you dared suggest that Mao was a colonialist in Tibet (I think about that when I see all the "Free Tibet" bumper stickers in campus parking lots). Yet, somehow, they equate the supposedly regressive Trump with a regime their mentors idolized.

    1. They (the progressives) have a net negative birth rate (when including abortions)... they are a dying breed, they just don't acknowledge it yet.
They find new recruits in the unloved cast-offs from misguided centrist and conservative parents who just plain want to spend more time pleasing themselves than raising their children.

Ok ok ok... *some* progressives mellow-out slightly when they have children of their own and finally, genuinely wonder how their devoutly espoused policies would actually affect their new babies in practice...

I seriously can't convince my aged-single friends that boys and girls are in fact fundamentally different. It takes being a parent to understand that, and even telling someone they can't conclude that boys and girls are the same without being a parent is unacceptable to the hide-bound dogma-dwelling progressives.
The 'spin' is just that deep with the progs.

Your observations/hypothesis has merit, dear reader, although it took me only one wife, sans kids, to learn how fundamentally different, if not cognitively deranged or maybe disadvantaged the weaker sex truly IS or can be?!

Perhaps the sexperts and or masseuses would call it, a manifestation of the feminine mystique? My X argued continually and vociferously that females and males were equal in all things, actual performance subordinate only to amount practice time or training. She is, bless her heart, a product of behavioral, if not classical conditioning, a child-like survivor of 60's era progressive brainwashing -- although, I recently heard she's had a breakout, an epiphany of sorts...

  10. I went trout fishing in a mountain stream and didn't see a single siul from 6 am to 6 pm. No TV, no radio, no cellphone just me, a couple of wandering deer and a thirsty black bear who never looked my way. Best 4th I've enjoyed in years! And the stream kept the Coors cold!

  11. About that word "progressive", speaking of their practice of changing the meaning of words. I'm currently on a crusade to stop that particular abomination of meaning. I ask that going forward, each of you call them what they really are; regressives.

  13. "I doubt that the lunatic Dems will win 2020. " I certainly hope not but I have yet to speak with a democrat who is going to vote for Trump and doesn't loathe Trump and those who voted for him. AOC doesn't embarrass them at all. And let's be honest. Trump won by a shrewd strategy that gave him the Electoral College. It's doubtful the dems will make the same FNG mistakes they made in 2016.

And in our fruitless fervor to avoid being labelled racist or homophobic and escape the threats social and financial ostracism we speak in hushed tones and only with those we know agree with us. The last time I was in the UK I noticed no one was willing to discuss Islam and its effect on the UK. If the subject was broached the subject was ignored and changed.
