One Flu Over the Cuckoos' Guess & Xi Said, so He Said

Enough is enough. More than enough. Much more!

All over the Western world, we have shut-down the economy, and damaged and perhaps destroyed irrevocably many of our fundamental rights and freedoms, all because of ChiCom lies and incompetence, and well-financed Western "modelers" and "experts" passing off guesses and political agendas as some sort of "science." Our elected officials have ceded their powers to these so-called "scientists" and technocrats. We, the people, suffer for it.

As I have said many times before, "science" and "scientists" ain't the same thing. A fast and easy definition of "science" is, "a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe." Is that what we have in dealing with the ChiCom virus? Hardly. We have in many respects the same sort of pseudo-science that exists in the Global Climate Change scam: a bunch of models that predict nothing, based, at best, on erroneous assumptions, i.e., guesses, and data changed to suit the winds not of nature but of politics and funding. As with the Global Climate Change nonsense, the "theories" or "models" in the ChiCom virus pandemic are not falsifiable, in other words, they do not make "testable explanations and predictions."

Never forget, anybody can call himself a "scientist," just as anybody can become a "journalist," or a "consultant." "Scientists," even good ones, have obligations, personal aspirations, political agendas, and, let us not forget, egos just as much as anybody else does. They need to pay the mortgage, too. Throughout history, we find "scientists" going where money, power, and prestige beckon.

Recent decades, of course, have seen an explosion in the population of "scientists." Look at how many college majors have the word "science" attached to their description. We have gone well beyond the white-haired chemist or physicist thinking deep thoughts while conducting replicable and falsifiable experiments. We have the political activist posing as the concerned and caring expert; we have the bureaucrat protecting his fief posing as the expert. We live in an era of mountebanks with access to enormous megaphones and power.

Democracy dies as the "experts" and their models spin their tales.

Be wary, my friends, of the "experts."

Back to the ChiComs.

Now there you have some experts, real ones, in spinning a story and getting their version out and about. The ChiComs have found the "experts" at the WHO very useful; these "experts" repeated Beijing's lies about the virus and praised China's efforts to handle it. I have worked with the "experts" at the WHO, and other UN agencies. Look, some good and well-meaning people do work in those agencies, but the majority? Well, not terribly smart in their alleged fields, and are just well-paid (tax-free) bureaucrats playing very complex political games within their organizations. The vast majority has a definitely leftist bent, with considerable antipathy towards the USA, even if we serve as the biggest source of most of these agencies' ample budgets. On the ground, these "experts" don't do very much, aside from engage in self-promotion, get driven around in Land Cruisers, issue an occasional press release, and live in expensive hotels. The ChiComs quickly realized this, and became masters at exploiting this situation for their own propaganda purposes. The Chinese have proven infinitely better at it than the heavy-handed and clumsy Soviets, who, in all fairness, lacked the huge Chinese foreign currency reserves and the well-coordinated and aggressive political, investment, and trade policies.

It came as no surprise that the current head of the WHO, virulently anti-American (and anti-Taiwan) Ethiopian Communist Dr. Tedros Adhanom, would side with the Communist Chinese, take his talking points from President Xi, and help him and the CCP cover-up their responsibility for the epidemic. The good doctor, by the way, has a track-record of covering up epidemics in his native country. People such as this clown get these flashy jobs because the USA traditionally does not pay much attention to the UN's specialized agencies--to our regret, as we see. We should either get very involved, given how much money we put in, or, better yet, get out of the whole UN nonsense entirely.

There. And, I don't claim to be an "expert," just somebody who has been around a while.

  2. In his Farewell Speech, President Eisenhower famously warned of the Military-Industrial Complex. He then warned of the dangers of government funding of science. A very perceptive man.

The late Michael Crichton proposed that any "science" proposed as the basis for public policy should first have a good old-fashioned Anglo-Saxon trial, with both pro- and con- being well-funded.

An alternative would be the North Korean style of controlling the bureaucracy, where a bureaucrat who is found unsatisfactory can be taken down to the soccer pitch and shot.

    1. We're getting close to Michael Crichton's idea. Before some scientific theory (SWAG hypothesis) is admitted in court, any party can demand what is called a "Daubert Hearing" (after the case establishing the right to call a hearing) and can be done either before a trial, or during.

    2. Crichton's _State of Fear_ was one of the few novels I've read in the past few decades (I'm mostly into non-fiction). It rang very, very true.

  4. I'm also pretty certain that Pres. Xi and his government aren't giving us the whole story on the extent of COVID-19 infection and mortality in Mainland China. And isn't wonderful that China sits on the UN Human RIghts Council?

I also note that Teodros Adhanom Gebreyesus got his start as a member of the Derg; while in the post-Derg government, urged close economic cooperation with Beijing, and now echoes Beijing's talking points.

As for science, it's just a fancy Latin term for "knowledge". Yet it's changed its mind on a number of things in the course of my lifetime. There's also Dr. Polanyi's observation that science is always tentative, while "science says" has become the masses' ex cathedra pronouncement.

  5. As for Taiwan, I'm all for recognizing it whether it calls itself the rump of Dr. Sun's Republic of China, Taiwan, Dong Ning, Great Liuqiu, or even Bob. But I'm not sure that would be possible in the world's current political climate.

    2. I'd also like to point out that Taiwan, which now has a media and active opposition that will call its government out for a failure, issued an early warning about COVID and managed to contain the virus--even though it is one of the most crowded countries on the globe.

Further, the Taiwanese also use "wet markets" (I lived there as a teacher a good number of years, on their economy). They also like their fish and poultry very fresh. Think the seafood and fish markets we have in some places Stateside. Yet somehow, the Taiwanese haven't launched any pandemics.

  6. A fast and easy definition of "science" is, "a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe."

Making predictions about the universe is exactly what a model does.

Hardly. We have in many respects the same sort of pseudo-science that exists in the Global Climate Change scam: a bunch of models that predict nothing, based, at best, on erroneous assumptions, i.e., guesses, and data changed to suit the winds not of nature but of politics and funding.

Yes, we all know you are ignorant about both the numerous experiments conducted by climate change scientists and the success of the models at making predictions over the part few decades. You don't need to keep advertising it.

As with the Global Climate Change nonsense, the "theories" or "models" in the ChiCom virus pandemic are not falsifiable, in other words, they do not make "testable explanations and predictions."

Actually, they do. Perhaps the notion of varying input conditions leading to alternative outcomes is a little much for some people. I'll try to make it simpler: When A can do five different things, and you make a model incorporating the behavior of A, you need to have five different outcomes, usually.

There. And, I don't claim to be an "expert,"

Don't worry, no one has been so confused as to consider you one.

While this virus grew to "panic proportions" in Wuhan, Washington was drunk on impeachment hearings, Castro-Sandersism, and wagging fingers of racism at Trump taking what steps he could as executive to stop this virus' importation.

It's so very rich how they insist that it's the administration who wasn't paying attention. Everything Trump did was tarred as 'racist', and a 'distraction from ukraine'.. whatever the heck they thought involved that crap.

How does this *not* merit poll punishment?

  9. I notice that China has decided that any academic papers on the COVID-19 virus need an extra layer of vetting.

  10. If China's leaders did the Wuhan Dance deliberately, they must be astonished at how successful this has been at getting Western leaders to commit economic suicide. A few sweeteners to the right people in politics, media, academia, bureaucracy -- and the West shuts down and starts blaming each other.

All China's leaders need to do is play some more mind games with a reputed Second Wave, and Westerners will be starving in the dark by Christmas -- without the Chinese firing a single shot!

And if Covid-19 was not deliberate, we can be sure that China's leaders have observed the West's reaction closely and are learning the lessons for another day.

    4. And that's why this must be viewed as an attack by the administration, even if the attack was accidental. It's not like the King of Saudi Arabia directly coordinated 9/11, but he/his government created conditions for it and might as well have been a direct attack.

The ChiCom's critical observations of their enemies strengths and weaknesses, and capitalizing on them are ancient(sic) strategic and tactical history! Today, the CCP -- as did the Soviet variety of communists -- have made "Progressive" recruiting of useful idiota ie global socialist tramps, thugs, thieves, and murderers!

As long as we the people allow the Left Wing to continue their covert and overt attacks on the USA we will continue to bleed. My dear sisters typing exercises from the '50s & '60s continue to inform and guide me: "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the Party"!

    7. I think the air is going out of the panic-demic. My wife is a liberal who reads the news a lot. She now agrees that neither CDC nor WHO nor China can be trusted, that Trump is trying to do the right thing (although she still hates him), that the business closures are too extensive, that harming the economy ruins and sometimes takes peoples lives, and that the models over-predicted and this disease may be as deadly as the common flu. Truth is winning.
