I am an American Republican/republican. As a rule, I don't care for monarchs and princes and dukes and counts, etc. That rule, however, did not hold for Queen Elizabeth II.
She ran the long race assigned her with grace, dignity, devotion to duty, wit, and deep love of her country, its culture, and traditions, and without a trace of scandal. A remarkable performance from a remarkable person.
Her passing, in my humble and probably worthless opinion, likely means the end of the British monarchy as we have known it. Her one great failing consisted of raising a brood of rather stupid children. The aged Prince of Wales, who I assume will now wear the crown, is a clown, who dabbles in woke causes, has a loose attitude towards the money he gets, and has a personal life far from dignified. I see none of his mother's spirit of self-sacrifice, dignity, and concern for tradition. His children, in turn, well, I don't know. The man once known as Prince Harry appears to have lost himself to the siren song of Hollywood and Malibu. William, we'll see. Maybe.
I am sorry to see Queen Elizabeth II pass on. In our modern world, she was one of a kind.
If only Charles had the vision to pass the Crown straight through to Willliam.

I lift my leg, and drop my head, just enough to avoid a
collision, and step thru, I come abrest of the Ward Room...
No one home there either! To my left, out of the corner of my eye, "A Christmas Card" on the bulkhead, from the Queen of England adressed to the "Crew of the Grenadier", I took it personally, considering my Great Grand Mother was related by her Scots blood, and if that wasn't enough there's my Grand Dad the Sgt Major in Robbie Gordon's Black Watch, and now me, a dedicated card carrying crewmember of the "Grenadier"! I was in reliable hands~~~

When was the last time any of us thought about the Royal Family of the Netherlands? Or of Denmark? Or of Norway? Or of Sweden? Or of Japan? Or of the other countries which still have Royalty?
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that that is the future of the Royal Family of England. They might get an occasional mention in the media on a slow day when Kim Kardashian has not done anything of note. But they will recede into the background.
Queen Elizabeth's great contribution was that she had always been there, throughout the entire lives of almost all of us. And now she is gone. May she Rest In Peace.
Her public persona was quite that of a gracious servant. It also sounds like her private persona was too. Yet somehow, her values did not pass down. UK royals can only be compared to hollywood celebrities (american royalty), to which she personally seems to have compared quite favorably. Apologies for the low bar, but there's little for comparison. Rest in peace. Long live King Ralph.

I would hope the William has a chance to save the Monarchy before his father destroys it. William of all of the Royals appears to be following in his Grandmother's conduct. Which leads me to a favorite joke. When Harry was having his bachelor party it must have been awkward to be stuffing bills with pictures of his Grandma of it into the g-strings of strippers.

I do wish people would not confuse the Monarchy with the actual person wearing the Crown.In the 1000 or so years since William 1 ,there have been good and and bad Sovereigns.The Monarchy has survived them all because that is what the people have wanted.Whether Charles will be good or bad, that remains to be seen.Every Monarch knows that they may be Head of State but they are there only as long as the people desire it.Several have found out the hard way that they can be removed if necessary.

King Charles has made it plain that he will not be pushing various things he feels strongly about. He will model himself on his mother. Those of my countrymen who fancy a republic - just look at the country we share a history with. Biden, Harris and Pelosi.

And far worse we have US Veterans dying from suicide and various poisons hourly, and nobody cares, but a foreign queen dies and the country goes crazy. I will never understand that.

DeleteWhile the UK and other countries recognizing the British monarch as their sovereign have my deepest and heartfelt condolences, I'll note that for every Elizabeth II, George VI, or Victoria, there are several Johns, William IV's (who was personally rebuked by the Duke of Wellington), and others who make a royal botch of things. King Richard the Lionhearted is seen as a paragon of chivalry, but his quarrel with Leopoled of Austria and Henry VI of the Holy Roman Empire resulted in his being imprisoned on his return from the Crusades, and necessitating an enormous ransom which doubtlessly weakened Prince John's standing in England (since John had to collect it). Republics have their drawbacks, and through every fault of our own, we Americans may be losing ours. However, in a monarchy, one fool on a throne can do a lot more damage more speedily.

One of the advantages of having a constitutional monarchy is the ability of the monarch - while a political figurehead - to have private discussions with elected officials (the PM) with the force of one being a participant in a thousand years of tradition. One could think of the monarch as a last resort for a behind the scenes intervention. Up to PM to listen or not, but that the monarch can hold such discussions is their privilege. I think that the fascination by Americans with royalty is the persona that that the whomever holds the monarchy gives. We have the US constitution to admire, but the ideas are abstract while a monarch is an existing object in the form of a person.

In 9/13, years have passed without significant Islamic terrorist attacks taking place on American soil. In past surveys, concern about Islamic terrorism ranks in the low single digits behind everything else.
In 9/13, culture wars, COVID, pronouns and other concerns have vastly eclipsed not only the barbaric mass murder of thousands, but the recognition that we are at war. And that war is far from over.
In 9/13, the people who once specialized in talking about the threat of Islam have increasingly moved on. And it's hard to blame them. No one really wants to hear it anymore. It's yesterday's news.
In 9/13, Mehmet Oz is the GOP Senate candidate, and he's not the only one, Saudi Arabia is our ally again and the vast majority of Americans polled don't think that there's anything wrong with Islam.
America's Islamic population is growing. The open border doesn't just bring in drug dealers and gang members, but massive numbers of people from the Muslim world. The Afghan airlift and visas will probably end up importing at least a quarter of a million as family reunification kicks in. Our national demographics are being transformed with the same eventual outcome as Europe.
But it's 9/13. When I write articles about Islam, they perform worse than anything else. And I don't have the same raw feeling toward the day that I used to. The ash used to haunt my nightmares. I snuck past the law enforcement and military presence downtown to make it to the site, the twisted mess of what was left, because I needed to know up close that what I had seen was real.
But it's not the same.
I hope it is for you. But I don't think it is for most of us.
Back then, afterward, I wondered how it was possible to move on and to forget. I was still young then and I concluded that the answer had to be time. With time, pain dulls, what seems fresh grows stale. Such things were abstractions then. I hadn't lived through phases of history or seen generations change.
That's no longer true. I've seen how people can change. How they can go mad. And how they can forget.
9/13 is all about forgetting.

I did not realize that the US was also being swamped with our Islamic 'friends'. Here in UK, we are being deliberately inundated with them. I had to leave the city where I lived when a mosque opened up nearby and moved to a smaller town outside. Even here, they are now taking over the town center. It seems that my country is being deliberately transformed and I regard the Islamization of the West as our biggest existential risk rather than climate change (which seems over-egged by the scientists) and mild respiratory diseases like Covid-19. I despair, I really do.

DeleteI've gone off-piste here as the original post was about the Queen. Constitutionally, it does not matter as Charles III immediately takes over. From the government website (yeah, I know) "In 2019, the most common ethnic group in England and Wales was White (84.8%), decreasing by 1.2 percentage points since the 2011 Census".

And that's in one of supposedly the most prosperous countries. And despite our problems, we are continuing to import thousands of largely unemployable third worlders each week. I'm not seeing how any of the Queen's children or Princess Margaret's children qualify as 'stupid', bar, perhaps, Prince Andrew, who associated with Jeffrey Epstein. It's also peculiar to slam Charles for 'woke' causes. Charles is 73 years old and has had the same menu of concerns for thirty-odd years. He's a conservationist in agreeable ways and in some disagreeable ones as well. As for his domestic life, he failed at being married to a very difficult woman (who cheated on him with at least three men whose names are known; who, over a period of 21 years, had periods of estrangement from her mother, her stepmother, one of her sisters and that sister's whole family, and, in her last years, her brother; who picked fights with the royal collaterals living in the residence next to her's; who fired one of her sons' much loved nannies and sliced up another in the media because she no longer had the discretion to dismiss her).
