Comey Serves Up a Nothingburger with Fries and Slaw

The Comey hearing. OK, I watched the damn thing. I am trying to avoid reading the post-hearing professional punditry so that I won't be influenced by the "experts" as I offer my own amateur punditry.

I think Comey damaged his reputation further (here, here, here) and came off as a cry baby with seriously hurt feelings. More important, however, at least to my mind, the whole thing was over in the first few minutes of Comey being questioned.

OK, my checklist:

--The President does have the right to fire the FBI director;

--The President, although he has the authority to do so, did not try to halt the investigation into General Flynn and "Collusion with Russia";

--The President told the truth when he said Comey had told him that Trump was not a target of the investigation;

--The President told Comey to continue with the investigation as he wanted to know if any of his "satellites" had done something wrong;

--The investigation continues even without Comey.

So what the hell is this all about? Where's the crime? Where's the scandal? Waiter, I would like a little meat between the bread slices, please.

Now there was a big nothingburger when it comes to "Trump scandals," but there also was a large order of fries and a side of slaw thrown on our plates a bit later.

First, as many of us suspected, Comey was the leaker of the Comey "memos." He admitted it, saying he did it to provoke the creation of a Special Counsel probe into the Russia issue. That is outrageous and helps explain this ex-Director's lax attitude towards leaks. Once he wrote those memos as FBI Director, those memos did not belong to him; they belonged to the United States Government and are subject to the appropriate USG classification and use regulations. The ex-Director should be charged.

Second, he casually acknowledged what many of us also had suspected, to wit, that former AG Lynch did try to interfere in the FBI investigation into the Clinton email scandal. Lynch needs to be subpoenaed, investigated, and, if appropriate, charged with obstruction of justice. Comey's own lax behavior in the wake of the Lynch attempt to obstruct justice should also be investigated, and he should face charges.

What comes out negative for President Trump?

Simply put, he got hoisted by his and his staff's inexperience with the slippery oily ways of Washington.

As a man who grew up in the construction/real estate business, mostly in the brutal New York market, Trump knows how to deal with sharks. He knows that, in the end, 99% of the time, a deal can be struck in which both parties emerge as winners. "Come on. We're alone now. What's your bottom line?" DC is different. DC is a town of lawyers. The DC sharks tend to be wily but cowardly; they hide behind lawyers, the endless reams of legal code that choke the town, and press leaks. Everything is quasi-legal and any "slip" an outrage to be exploited by the progressive media.

You need a lawyer to do almost anything; no conversation should be held without a lawyer present. In the DC environment, Trump expressing his wish that Flynn be spared further embarrassment and prosecution after already having been abruptly dismissed from his job as National Security Advisor, turns into a lawyer gabfest. Did the President try to interfere with any investigation into Flynn? Not that I know. So he expressed his wish to see the guy not be slimed anymore, so what?

This has to stop. We have people out of work; jihadis running amok; the Norks threatening to pop nukes over Honolulu and Okinawa; the Chinese paving over the South China Sea; and Putin laughing his head off as we run around chasing our tails with these idiotic scandals.

To quote PM May, "Enough is enough!"

  1. My sincere and most respectful Thanks Very Much Diplomad Sir.

That, "DC is a town of lawyers" ... "You need a lawyer to do almost anything."

If memory serves our President attended 'Wharton' NOT the usual Yale, Harvard etc ... that's what's pissed me off the most about all these "public servants" that've been helpfully guiding this slow-rolling steamy pile of ... [insert individual choice].

    Thank you Sir.

  4. I agree that Trump doesn't "get" the DC environment. Case in point: much is being made of Trump asking for loyalty from Comey. All of the talking-heads miss the point that Comey, being a swamp dweller, can only define loyalty as the servility of a toady. Anyone that has been in DC for any length of time knows that anyone with real power doesn't have to request toadyish obedience, it's assumed. Ergo Trump was weak for asking, or trying, as many of us understand it, to remind Comey that he had a higher duty than self service, and so Comey immediately stabbed Trump in the back via the media, to signal that he was available to the real power players.

Many of us Deplorables are watching this dog-and-pony show and are thoroughly disgusted. Do they really think their going to impeach Trump with impunity. Really! I am reminded of the scene in "Saving Private Ryan" where the squad is going through the dogtags trying to determine if Ryan is KIA and yukking it up, and the medic comes over and snatches the tags out of their hands and, when they ask why, he has to explain that the ,"whole goddamn airborne is watching." He doesn't have to explain that they are also armed to the teeth. Well it appears that the politicians, media, etc. have no one tell them that we're all watching, and we are not amused. And here's the important part - Trump's constituency are almost all people who actually do things, not just talk, and tangible results are a daily expectation not merely an occasional side effect.

I disagree with that. I think he understands exactly how corrupt the cesspool is. That is why he ran...

He had a big win today. The media will never admit it of course, but as I predicted, they'll fall all over their selves for a couple days, then reality sets in. There is no criminal investigation into Trump Russkie collusion. There is no criminal conspiracy. There is no obstruction of justice. There will be no impeachment.

Their paid for Clinton patsy, Comey, failed to deliver. He was outsmarted by Trump. One single tweet killed him - there might be tapes...

  5. Respectfully disagree that Trump is blameless. For a smart man who knows he is surrounded by sharks, he's being bullheadedly reckless. Against advice of everyone, he has talked and tweeted way too much and created some of the furor himself.

E.g., 1) All the different explanations of why he fired Comey - when none was required, sometimes contradicting his own spokespeople, and then using Rosenstein memo, first saying it the cause of the firing, then saying he had already made up his mind. He put Rosenstein directly in the line of fire and made it inevitable that Rosenstein would get himself out of line of fire by hiring Special Counsel. In Rosenstein's place I would have done same thing. 2) After having all his spokespeople say his EO's aren't a "travel ban," he now gets so frustrated he announces, it IS a travel ban. I don't care if it is or isn't - he can't cut his spokespeople and himself off at the knees and lose their and his credibility like that. Note, there are no longer many surrogates outside the Admin. willing to talk for him. People will still defend him, but they are not willing to speak for him in a traditional surrogate role. Who would if you don't know whether he will 10 minutes later contradict what he sent you out to say? 3) He just started a feud with the Mayor of London, a despicable terrorist apologist who indeed had trashed Trump first . And I understand Trump wants to contrast his own attitude with passivity of that guy. But he could have highlighted his own determination to wipe the vermin out and not accept terror as the new "normal" without making it specifically a feud with the Mayor of London. Is that feud particularly helpful toward the trip he wants to make to Britain. Is it helpful in any way?

I am a lawyer, incidentally. I think I am watching a lot of unforced errors and an absence of discipline im an otherwise great man, a man who keeps giving his enemies ammunition they are all too ready to use against him. As president, he does well well when he talks and tweets about his agenda, and maybe a few of his more controversial tweets have strategic purpose. But other than his agenda, as a fervent supporter - and lawyer, I want him to SHUT UP AND STOP WITH THE MANIC TWEETS. Imho, the part of his base who thinks that's all great and egg him on are unwise, reckless (as is he in the speech and tweets I am talking about) and blind to consequences.

I notice he has stayed silent so far about the Comey testimony, undoubtedly under orders of counsel. I bet the lawyer made that a condition of representation. (No high profile lawyer will put up with being made to look like a fool by a client - even if client is POTUS.) I hope this silence is the start of a new prudence - and silence.

    -----

Reminder about Comey as creep and snake:

    1. In 2004, he was DoJ prosecutor who let Sandy Berger off with misdemeanor and stopped investigation going to question of WJC involvement.

    2. As General Counsel for Lockheed, he okayed Lockheed contribution to Clinton Foundation.

    3. He was DoJ prosecutor who appointed his close friend FritzPatrick as Special Prosecutor in Valerie Plame matter and ok'ed prosecution of Scooter Libby.

His testimony was full of obvious, demonstrable lies.

Re PM May and her famous quote...looks like the British voters did something alright, in the face of recent terror attacks they voted Red, hung their government and collapsed. Trump needs to exercise some discipline fast or the Yellow Journalism in DC will undo him without a crime being mentioned.

No I didn't forget. I don't think we know whole story about that. Possible Clinton in part got bum rap. Rich imho was Israeli agent who helped them on currency matters and I think Iran. Clinton took money for pardon, but there may have also been request from Israeli gov't. I suspect there was. This was at same time as Pollard, and we didn't give them Pollard. Clinton may have given them Rich. I always leave that one out since I don't know whether what I suspect is correct. I have better, longer list on Comey but don't have time to post it now. I'll post it later.

    4. I don't know if it's a deliberate strategy or not, but Trump's endless tweeting that gets him into DC traps continues to cement his role as an 'outsider'. It seems to me that he doesn't want to give up that role. Maybe it's just an 'own goal', or maybe he thinks there are enough people fed up with DC Dysfunction that he'll gain leverage via the "at least he's not lying to us" factor.

It's totally of ridiculous that a major power of the presidency, ie, immigration, is constrained not by the text of the law, but by the utterances of people who are associated with the law. This is a lefty jurisprudence trick if I've ever seen one. Control the language, control the law.

He knows what he's doing, and I love seeing him do it.

His tweets you so dislike cut right through the fog of MSM bullscheiss and take his message straight from him to his supporters (that would be me, for one).

In addition they make his enemies go bonkers and run their own mouths to Trump's eventual benefit.

    7. mariner (and On Watch):

I said some tweets have strategic purpose - e.g., the one re tapes. But that warning could have been sent by having surrogates speculate on their existence or communicated in some other way. But ok, an occasional strategic bombshell tweet, if he must.

I don't want Trump to stop "being Trump." But as a lawyer, I recognize when someone is "making admissions against interest," or otherwise creating adverse consequences for themselves. Look at the 3 specific examples I used in my original post. Can you explain how they help, not hurt, Trump? You can't, because they hurt Trump. Maybe not to some of the base, but to everyone else.

I realize Trump's approach is thrilling to some, or even a lot, of the base. BUT besides creating unneeded trouble for himself, the seeming manic-ness of the tweets (Come on, "covfefe" for god's sake!), the oddness of a grown man spending hours alone late at night or early in tbe morning firing off angry tweets, the chaos created by so many statements, explanations and feuds and maybe just THE SHEER VOLUME OF NOISE turn off many, maybe most, people. So many, including myself, find it odd, inappropriate, annoying, juvenile, etc. and just plain exhausting. I'm talking about many people who aren't against his agenda, even sort of agree with it, but can't get past their distaste for the oddness, chaos and contradictions. Why alienate so much support he would otherwise have?

One poster wrote he loves seeing Trump piss off all the people who should be pissed off. Er, the point here is SUCCESS in implementing agenda, not providing a thrill show for the base. The satisfaction of having him piss off Dems/RINOS is blinding many of the base to how much problem Trump is creating for himself and how many unforced errors he is making. (The Special Counsel is a direct result of Trump's contradicting statements about Rosenstein and his memo. Does Trump plan on avoiding London when he goes to Britain?)

Something else the base overlooks: his staff need less chaos to be able to act. You don't think the constant uproar impedes and distracts them? You don't think everyone has now lawyered up and is scared to death of Mueller doing a Scooter Libby to them? And why do you think most of the outside surrogates have dropped off?

Is thrilling a portion of the base worth scaring off others, giving food to Dems and in some instances creating legal jeopardy? I agree it all makes his enemies go bonkers. But how about having them go bonkers because Trump is succeeding on his agenda? I disagree the benefit provided by them running their mouths off outweighs the harm Trump does to himself. Here is the one argument that can be made: all the distraction also distract the opposition and maybe allows things to get done his oposition don't notice. I'll give that a little credence, but still don't think that's enough benefit to outweigh the harm.

Twas me. Pissing off the right people means you are winning a battle in this case. The larger war winner is still unknown, but I have high hopes it will the president.

Most of you simply don't know or ignore what President trump is facing every single day. A corrupt government that has every intention of either taking him down or tying him up by making every effort to roll back the corrupted prog government fail.

He is succeeding anyway. His tweets, as some other brilliant people have put it are "weaponized and deadly". That it embarrasses a few less hardy souls is of no consequence.

You really think having talked/tweeted his way into Special Counsel and Comey hearing and now needing to fend off obstruction of justice charges is a GOOD thing???? For either him or any of Congress who want to support him or FOR HIS STAFF? You think staff can work well in this atmosphere? Do you really think angry late night tweet about "covfefe" conveys stability or anything good? Respectfully, you're nuts.

Friday with prez. of Romania, Trump affirrmed NATO Article V (We'll defend any member.) As far as I've seen, press hasn't even covered that - they're covering what Trump said about Comey at that press conference.

I want Trump to talk/tweet about his AGENDA. It's the other talking/tweeting I'm talking about. And yes, occasionally one of the other tweets has been strategically good. But those tweets e.g., about possible tapes, were message to specific people, not necessary for whole base, and could have been conveyed equally effectively and with more dignity through surrogates on TV or in op ed piece. It was good to have Comey wondering about tapes -it forced his admission that he had told Trump he not under investigation. That is crucial. But I disagree that it's good to have president himself sending out cryptic, bombshell tweets. That is not a dignified, gravitas way to communicate.

The point of this presidency is for Trump to survive and succeed on his agenda, not to thrill part of his base with his daring. And it's crazy for you to decide I'm some kind of troll because I hold this opinion. It makes me wonder how serious either of you are about the actual agenda and Trump achieving it. Is it just the pyrotechnics you want? If not, then we are on the same side and this is a disagreement, not a fight. If you care about and want only the pyrotechnics - Well, then it is a fight.

The war against Trump has nothing to do with his "tweets". The war against him, the attempt of a soft coup, the attempt to stop his agenda (an American agenda) is being conducted by a corrupt cabal including congress and republicans.

    16. msher, I'm mostly agreed with you... but at the same time, there may be a greater strategy involved beyond and including the whole "get congress good and distracted with investigations that will lead nowhere"
My guess would be "so what happens when this peters out?" will Trump have a stronger hand? If this nothing-sandwich results in.. nothing... then the public will have less patience for further congressional shenanigans. (of course, the lefties will never tire of the slander and baseless allegations, I'm talking about the run-of-the-mill 5-10% of america who effectively elected both Obama and Trump by participation or non-participation)

Trump is fighting *both* parties right now. These congressional investigations aren't coming from the democrats... they're powerless to look into this crap with their minority. This is the GOP host, the Grahams, McCains, and Rubios, who are *all* pissed off that their party has been hijacked by a populist of various political persuasions.

Trump gets through this stronger if it's indeed the 'nothing sandwich' it appears to be.

I agree these look like 'own goals', much like slamming a 'Gold Star Father' seemed back after the democrat convention. Maybe it's a mistake, maybe it's calculated, or maybe it's just instinct. This guy has gone from "won't last the first round of primaries" to potus... all the while somehow making more and more people think he's just stupid, insecure, and enormously lucky (I'm not claiming anybody here is one of these people). It's possible they're right.

As Msher above (June 10, 2017 at 11:10 AM) replies in part, " You don't think everyone has now lawyered up and is scared to death of Mueller doing a Scooter Libby to them?"

Cutting to the chase, I'm not so enamored of Mueller's abilities as I'm more inclined to thinking - and I've very recently "in real life" taken a bet (as opposed to blog-life) against my brother-in-law's contention that, "Trump will be impeached and out of office by Christmas" (he's hopelessly libtarded, in my opinion, aside from not being a lawyer neither am I a psychiatrist - a recovering 'spook' if you must know).

So no, I'm not so much 'in faith of Mueller' rather, I'm spiteful of the media's breathless confidence that it [the media] can quickly (keyword - quickly) take down Trump and thus restore the prog's version of its faux-sanity wherein everyone will take up humbly its hair shirts and dine on herbs where love is.

  10. Expanded list of why Comey is a snake, Clinton-plant and demonstrable liar.

1 He first came into Clintonworld in 1996 as deputy special counsel to the Senate special committee on the Whitewater investigation.

    2. Comey was lead prosecutor while in U.S Attorney's Office for Southern District of New York against Marc Rich. In 2002, as the US. Atty for Southern District, he oversaw criminal investigations into Clinton's last-minute presidential pardons, including of Rich. The investigations concluded there was no wrongdoing on the Clinton's part, despite donations to Clintons. All of pardons stunk - money went to Clintons, or Hillary's Senate run. Rich pardon gets most attention because of large amount of money involved- $450,000 from Rich to Clinton library and $10O,O00 from Rich's ex wife to Hillary Senate campaign. I personally wonder whether Israeli goverment, whom Rich often helped, asked Clinton to do that pardon. However even if so, it like the other pardons was corrupt as the Clintons reeived money for it. There were no prosecutions on any of the pardons.

    3. Comey was DoJ prosecutor who in 2004 let Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger off on misdemeanor charges for stealing classified Clinton Admin. documents wanted by 911 Commissoin from National Archives. He also stopped investigation from probing whether Bill Clinton involved.

    4. As General Counsel of Lockheed Martin, he approved payments to Clinton Foundation.

    5. Back at work in DoJ, he was DoJ prosecutor who appointed his close friend Fitzpatrick as Special Prosecutor in Valarie Plame matter, and approved FitzPatrick prosecution of Scooter Libby.

    6. To get his appointment as FBI Director, he told story of how he rushed to bedside of hospitalized AG Ashcroft to stop W.H. counsel Gonzalez and Chief of Staff Andrew Card from getting Ashcroft to sign an unconstitutional measure. How dramatic, and how presumptuous. Gonzalez was equally competent to make that determination, as was Ashcroft. Another example of him thinking only his opinion could be right - and throwing Bush people under bus.

    7. His brother is an accountant who works for firm that did Clinton Foundation internal audit and does Foundation's tax returns. His brother works on Foundation matters. Any investigation of Foundation would necessarily extend to his brother. Yet Comey in charge of Hillary and Foundation investigations. Why has no one raised glaring conflict of interest? Mr. Boy Scout, indeed!

    8. His deputy McCabe is close enough to Clintonworld that his wife got $750,000 from Clinton friend/benefactor/former campaign manager Terry MacAulife for her failed Senate run. Yet McCabe was/is actual supervisers on Clinton and Trump investigations. McCabe should have been recused.
(Why no howls about that conflict of interest?) Comey testified he didn't know what Trump meant when he told Comey he had never raised "the McCabe thing."

Demonstrable lie. Of course Comey knew what Trump meant.

    1. I think I need a shower after reading all the mis-deeds of these people.

    2. Comey is a crook, paid by the Clintons.

      Best summary I've read:

    3. Pretty depressing. You have to wonder how John Ashcroft was snookered into hiring this operator.

    4. barry, re the hammer article... interesting theory... one of the wackiest part of this whole deal is how does the FBI go about validating a large batch of emails in like less than a week? Even with strong/intelligent matching code, there are going to be data adjustments and enormous slews of 'one off issues' that will be very tedious and time consuming. Even if they threw 'everybody they have at it' (and I don't think the FBI is actually very sophisticated like this), it would still take a lot of time just to cross-check and verify the results of their search.
      Possible? Yes. Likely? No.

    5. Anon,

Why on earth anyone would believe Obama would appoint a truly honest uncompromised person as the director the FBI is beyond me.

      Of course he's a crook.

"...himself sending out cryptic, bombshell tweets. That is not a dignified, gravitas way to communicate. "

"Gravitas" my A$$! The Donald is in an existential war for America's Life! Moreover he'd be in this fight, whether or not he followed ditzy lawyerspeak concoctions! NO! This is not a courtroom tussle, with the pretense of decorum and mutual respect! It is a STREET FIGHT, in which the duly elected POTUS has been targeted by embedded anti-America enemies and traitors, many of whom are Lawyers, and would be tickled if their target, started speaking in the dialect of shysters and progressive polecats -- ain't gonna happen sister! What he will do is informatively speak to supporters with respect and clarity, and deliver KO punches to his enemies, incompetents, and other opponents-–using heaping spadesful of dirt (and tweets) laden with fact, derision and disrespect!

With reference to your taking umbrage with being outted as a troll, although you are more wordy than the average gnome, you sure do to fit the mold! But then again, you're the chica who appealed to the pretence of 'Higher Authority', your Lawyership!

I could take the time to fisk every paragraph, of every one, of your error filed posts, but why bother, your stuff is stuck permanently in the realm of contrived clucking! When you first began posting hereabouts, under the Ms.Her handle, you whined that nobody was reading your posts, you were probably right! Not just because they were rambling rancorous ruminations, but more because your best counsel sounds more like advice for President Trump's defeat! Yes, I hear you TESTIFYING, “we’re on the same side” but sorry Charlie, with friends like you, who needs Democrats? I do realize of course that the best parsimonious explanation for your political POTUS prognosis, is that you’re simply stuck at an immutabilis level of lawyerly artifice. Although, That doesn’t mean we can’t find a place for you in Trump’s 2nd Term, maybe in COIN?
    On Watch~~~

P.S. and Btw, I’m still patiently waiting for your mind-reader list: “many people who aren't against his agenda, even sort of agree with it, but can't get past their distaste for the oddness, chaos and contradictions.” – YEAH SURE MS.Her, just deliver the list. Ty~~~

Ooops, I found the list: The "authors" at National Disgrace online and the Weakly Standard.

  13. "You need a lawyer to do almost anything; no conversation should be held without a lawyer present." It's the same right down to the local level. Ever go to a Village board meeting and watch duly elected trustees defer every decision to a Village Attorney?
