Havin' A Laugh

Ah, yes. Life is good.

I am thoroughly enjoying the YUUUUGE scandal now sweeping through the "elite" prog universities and, of course, I love the revelation of prog Hollywood's involvement in the affair.

I won't try to link to all the stories out there on the scandal. Let's just say that the prog claim to moral superiority over the rest of us just took yet another Long Lance torpedo amidships. We have the prog elite paying tens-of-thousands, nay even millions of dollars, to corrupt administrators and other staff of prog universities and to SAT/ACT test-givers to get their not-so-bright little darlings into "prestige" universities to learn, I guess, all about "social justice."

Getting woke ain't cheap! The little darlings now will learn about how white wealthy people are evil, and how to use approved SJW language and virtue signaling. Gotta be up-to-date on those hashtag campaigns. Gotta proclaim the virtues of diversity.

They will have that credential! They will have it no matter what it costs. These folks strike me to being akin to those rich American women who would troll the European aristocracy hoping to marry some poor soul with a title. Gotta have that title!

This is the ultimate gaming of the system. Some progs game it by claiming to be a Native American woman, others by claiming to be a Kenyan student, some dispense with all that and just open up the wallet and buy the stairway to wokeness and prog status. Must have that degree! So what if I kick to the kerb some poor hardworking sod!

A couple of leftoid A-list actresses, one of them Felicity Huffman always full of advice for the rest of us (and here), have been arrested by the FBI for their parts in this new version of the old payola scandal. College personnel also have felt the coolness of stainless steel cuffs on their wrists.

The FBI begins to redeem itself! Bravo!

I laugh myself to sleep . . .

    1. Thoroughly enjoyed reading the LIST OF PERPS,
almost as much as the CHARGES&FINES the jackasses are facing:

The charge of racketeering conspiracy provides for a sentence of no greater than 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater and restitution.

The charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of not more than $500,000 or twice the value of the property involved in the money laundering.

The charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States provides for a sentence of no greater than five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.

The charge of obstruction of justice provides for a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.

The charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, and of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and honest services wire fraud, provide for a sentence of no greater than 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of 250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater.

Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

  3. All the parents are wealthy and while it is going to cost them. Not a one of them will see prison, only monetary loss. Because while the SJW rails about color and sex, green is really the only color that matters. Money can't buy you love, it can buy a way out of crimes like these. Mr Singer, has lived up to his name "expected to plead guilty". So, he is going to get the light sentence. The coaches, test admins, accountant, and bagman are going down for the full count.

  5. The MSM is already trying to deflate this scandal by telling us how 'all this is really how things have always been done' or the rich always have an advantage, or yeah but how about who else might have gotten away with this. Make this story go away via blather and deflection. Our liberal betters will buy their ruling status if they have to.

  7. In my many years in academic life nobody tried to bribe me, either for admission or for a favourable exam mark.

But once I caught a student cheating. I phoned the student discipline Panjandrum to seek his advice, confident that it would be "take all steps necessary to preserve our academic integrity." Alas, what he actually said was "Be very careful: keep this out of the courts. Some of these kids have rich and angry fathers."

It made me long for the moral simplicity of my time in industry.

  8. I am enjoying watching the smug, treacly, vegan PETA-humpin Lori Laughlin get sucked into this.

    Ha. Hahaha. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha(gasp, wheeze) hahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa

Fun times. We live in fun times.

    1. I'm not up on pop culture. If Lori Laughlin really is a PETA vegan I'm joining you in your belly laugh and Schadenfreude. I've generally found vegans to be a smug and unsympathetic lot (with a few exceptions).

  9. I taught engineering for 12 years at a small state school in Texas. The few times I caught cheaters, they failed the course. I never got a complaint about how it was handled from either the administration, students, or their families. I did get a couple complaints from students about failing to catch a small cell of cheaters we all suspected was operating

  10. There's a background that's missing, particularly for the California schools. Some time ago, California voters nixed affirmative action for things like school admissions - but they forgot one thing - out of control open borders. Now at schools like Berkeley, UCLA and USC more than a quarter of overall admissions go to the children of east Asians. They are harder studying with traditional full family academic support and often from upper income homes. Since they tend to cluster in the more lucrative fields they are even more over represented in STEM and med fields. So the odds of getting your public school educated children of the hippie elite has been severely impacted. When the Ivys are hit with the anti-discrimination suits a lot of Wall st bankers are going to wonder why they can't get their offspring into those schools as well.

    1. A lot of California's better-off Far Eastern immigrant families are not beneficiaries of the [see no illegals] open borders policies of the state. Many tend to be skills-based immigrants recruited for the STEM-based industries of the state.

    2. Do not doubt that any such rules are being worked around.
A UC professor was discussion recruiting masters students at a state university into their PhD program. When discussing tuition waivers, he openly professed that they reserve those waivers for foreign students because they include waiver of non-resident fees.
What did he have to fear, it's not like he could be fired....

    3. According to one study, 13 percent of the illegal population are east asian. Between one and two million. That's not the only issue. Big Tech flung the doors wide open to reduce the cost for technical work. They may be "legal" but only by virtue of what amounts to bribes to both Republican and Democrat pols. Let me put it this way. When I was in grad school 10 years ago, I attended a second year grad physics class - there were 20 students and I was the only Caucasian. Those students are undoubtedly working here now and their kids are putting your kids into 3rd tier state colleges. So your options are now either going total "Tiger Mom" or sending your kids to a 3rd tier school if they have an aptitude for science and technology but not the "number one or death" commitment. It's true that we need plumbers too.

    4. Honestly, I think there's something to learn between the chinese-american over-achiever-culture and the traditional american working-for-the-weekend culture. My impression is that many parents from genealogically-deep american backgrounds are too soft on their kids in achievement and too easily accept poor behavior with "kids will be kids" attitudes. That's typically not 'learned wisdom' as much as it is 'disinterest and impatience'. At the same time, the problems with the tiger-mom attitude are a clear threat to the safety and lives of kids. But I think a renewed interest in academic achievement would serve public schools well, particularly if it came at the expense of the 'imperceptible injustice industry'.

Many students tell the news that they expect to be shot at their public schools. While this view may be the result of declining math test scores contributing to an inability to process probabilities, it's troublesome nonetheless. Fortunately there are now a burgeoning number of options for schooling outside the hyper-liberal traditional public schools (may they rest in peace... please).

  13. I fail to understand the gleeful responses to Lori Logan and others being arrested and charged in the buy-your-way-into-university scandal. The big crooks in this affair are the college employees and the intermediaries who solicited bribes. It's as if we chose to arrest parents who pay ransoms to free their children from kidnappers.

The parents are wrong, of course, but more to the point they are fools being preyed upon by the middlemen and by faculty at presumably prestigious schools. The latter two groups are those at whom we should be directing both our indignation and criminal charges.

Overpaid colleges should be included among the culprits. Since our concern, many years back, that the USSR was graduating more engineers, scientists and mathematicians we've incidentally encouraged colleges to dream up new fields of academic pursuit along the order of various "studies" and survey courses so loved by students and parents who want the prestige of a degree more than the knowledge of a useful field of endeavor. The possibly worthy goal of gaining more technically-skilled graduates has gone by the boards.
