Absurd . . . on Steroids

OK. Regular readers--all six of you--know my view of the current "lock-down to save humanity" from a not particularly deadly virus of ChiCom origins. Won't go into all that, again, and how we are being misled by camera-loving "experts" with kooky models that predict nothing accurately.

No. Won't do that.

This post is about something much, much smaller than the fate of the humanity, or even of our economy. It is about me, and my latest suffering at the hands of the "experts."

The Diplowife decided today that we needed to buy one of those electric grills, you know, the George Foreman sort of thing to accompany our regular gas BBQ. I don't question orders. So, we jumped into the ol' Jeep and headed into the sunny and nearly deserted streets of lovely Wilmington, North Carolina. Off we went to Walmart. We arrived at a nearly empty parking lot and walked into the cavernous building and went looking for an electric grill. We quickly discovered why the store, which was very fully stocked, was nearly devoid of customers.

Whole sections of the place had been cordoned off by what I call "Crime Scene Tape."

Little printed signs hanging from the tape explained that in compliance with orders from the authorities of New Hanover County prohibiting the sale of non-essential items, all sections of the store which sold said nonessential items had been closed. No bikes. No toys. No sports gear or wear. No video games. No kitchen goods . . . and, of course, NO ELECTRIC GRILLS!

They had them. We could see them just out of reach on the other side of the crime scene tape. But like the inhabitants of some Communist or otherwise Third World regime, we were only allowed to look at the fancy goods; we could not touch them, much less buy them! Our grill-buying dollars worthless in our pockets. Much like they're all going to be if we keep issuing trillion dollar "rescue" packages and not re-open the economy.

In a foul mood, we returned to the Jeep and--FLASH!--decided to head to the local Lowe's DIY warehouse. Ha! The edicts of the New Hanover County "authorities" seemed not to apply inside Lowe's!

Grills everywhere! Gas! Charcoal! Wood! And, yes, electric! We quickly placed a giant one in our cart and slithered out to the cashier . . . casting nervous glances over our shoulders, fearing at any moment that the New Hanover Non-Essential Enforcers would come crashing down on us. But, no, we paid and made it to our Jeep and home. I assembled the thing and there it sits: a gleaming red and silver trophy of defiance!

We took on Dr. Fauci's model and won! Take that ChiCom virus! We won't stop buying electric grills . . . made in China, btw.

      Pandemic Hardening Can Make America Great
      Posted by Daniel Greenfield

      ~~~2nd Term Planning~~~
      "That’s why President Trump ran on, among other things, a travel ban from terrorist nations.
      As the nation undergoes another shock, we are going to have to think about how to rebuild our society so that it will be hardened against another pandemic. That is going to require hard choices beyond throwing more money at the same alphabet soup government agencies that failed to protect us.
      There are three key areas to think about: biological security, urban living, and domestic manufacturing.
      The coronavirus, like September 11, was primarily a national security failure. The massive alphabet soup of government agencies, from the CDC to the FDA to the State Department to the CIA failed to correctly assess the problem, take action, coordinate, and keep the nation safe from an external threat.
      The nature of the threat on September 11 flew under the radar because it was too big for security agencies and too small for the military, it didn’t fit the shape of what the FBI or Joint Chiefs did. And so we began the task of transforming both the military and security agencies into fitting that shape.
      The Department of Homeland Security, in theory the sort of entity that might tackle multifaceted threats, which would include a pandemic, has failed to live up to expectations of basic competence.
      The CDC meanwhile spends so much of its focus on social issues that it’s unfit for the job.
      After the coronavirus, we will need a national security agency capable of tackling a pandemic. It will need to have intelligence gathering abilities, veto power over immigration, and the ability to quickly commandeer resources to meet a foreign disease outbreak by testing and quarantining suspects. And it must be able to plan both defensive and offensive biowarfare against hostile entities like the PRC.
      Call it the Biological Security Agency...."
    4. Excellent article, On Watch! Thanks for the link.
      He's got a good recipe for making America a lot better than it is, but I don't have much hope it'll be accomplished. Though if anyone can do it, it's Donald J. Trump!
  2. I saw a pic a couple of days ago of seeds (fruit/veggie/etc) as being non-essential, as well. I guess growing your own food and cooking it isn't essential.
  3. In my former home state of Vermont, now a leftist "paradise" retailer cannot sell homeowners garden seeds/tools/etc. They can sell to farmers but not individual homeowners.
  5. I remember seeing Geo Foreman hawking his grills, electric, of course, and wondering what all of the fuss was about. A couple years ago my wife picked up a small one at an estate sale for $5 or less and I have discovered what it is really good for---panini sandwiches.....whoda thunk it?
    Just butter (lightly) the bread and face the buttered sides together, then construct the sandwich on top of the top slice. Use whatever you might like for a panini, or even just a sandwich. Then, when the GF grill is up to temp, put the top slice of bread (with ingredients above on the grill, then put the other buttered slice of bread, butter-up and close the lid, smashing the sandwich down. Let it cook until stripes are toasted on each buttered side of the bread. Enjoy. You're welcome......
  6. We’ve been asked to wear masks.
    Masks are hard to find.
    Patterns and instructions for making masks are available online.
    My wife decided to use the Craft Passion pattern.
    The pattern requires cotton cloth (We have piles of it; she sews A LOT.), shoe laces, paper filters, and pipe cleaners (Got all three at Walmart.)
    It also requires double folded bias tape available from Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby is closed as non-essential.
  7. My wife is also making masks. The Craft Passion and the Olson patterns.
    I am using tin snips to cut the nose piece from a sheet of duct work. She has tons of quilt fabric and elastic.
  8. Yeah, somebody better 'splain to these idiot medical "experts" that once they manage to destroy the country's economy, there won't be any money (at least any worth a sheet of tp) to pay their salaries.
    On a happier note a friend with a chimney bidness is talking with me about building me an outdoor Brazilian stove/grill that uses either wood or propane. Things are a little slow at his place at the moment(It's normally a middle six-figure annually business there.)
  9. A case can be made that an Electric grill is an essential product, because it is used to cook food while inside your house.
    On another note. Yes, the Virus prediction models are crap. Which goes a long way to show that models are crap. So, when this blows over and the Donks start up with their climate change models again. Their argument isn't going to be as strong as before because climate change is dependant on models.
    1. That's backwards.. the claim will be that the models influenced state and local governments to contain the outbreak... the resultant 'deaths averted' (which will be a new metric from 'The Models') will prove in the eyes of progressives that models work.
      Yes... beyond stupid, but they routinely get away with this stuff. Moving people to caves will become 'a necessary result of global warming models'... models which were verified by people 'not dying' to this virus.
      I think we all know this is coming...
  11. Went to Wally World last night to get some new pants for my recently bulging waistline. ( due to the gym being closed and not even allowed to walk the beach ) They closed the fitting rooms " so their Associates could concentrate on cleaning and helping other customers ". Will try Sears or Target today before maximum stupidity reaches its zenith
  12. That's a real weird experience with your local Walmart. Went to Walmart yesterday in my own town and it was mostly back to normal. They had both toilet paper and paper towels, cereal, canned goods, and even pasta (though there were still limited quantities in some cases). NONE of the goods were "off-limits" though people were probably less-inclined to buy certain things based on personal circumstances.
  13. Hah - went looking for some PRI-G fuel additive and ended up at an RV dealer out in the middle of Nowhereville. While wondering around after grabbing the PRI-G, I discovered they had a small firearms section. Scored 30 boxes of .22 subsonic, 10/50rd boxes of 62gr 5.56 and 4 boxes of 20ga buckshot - life is good even in disaster times. The best part is I didn't take all they so I may go back for the rest, heh, heh, heh..
