Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at the age of 87. I express my condolences to her family and friends. May she rest in peace.
You can go to all sorts of media stories about her life, so I won't bother going over it all.
Her death unleashes yet another political firestorm in a year in which it was hard to imagine yet another political firestorm. We will see a battle over whether President Trump should or should not name a replacement for RBG. The Dems will wheel out the tired arguments about not naming a Justice during an election year--unless, of course, a Democrat is in the White House. The Republicans, I hope, will cite RBG herself,
When asked if the Senate should consider then-President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, Ginsburg said, “That’s their job,” the New York Times reported. “There’s nothing in the Constitution that says the president stops being president in his last year,” Ginsburg added.
So, do the head count, if the Senate votes exist, then move on. Let the Dem mob riot in the street, that's what they do best.
Now, let's turn to RBG herself.
We see her held up as an icon, described--even by President Trump--as "amazing." We have a true intellectual giant such as Meghan Markle, the Royal High Grand Duchess of Cupcakes and NetFlix or whatever, telling us mortals, from her mega-mansion on the California coast, that RBG, “has been a true inspiration to me since I was a girl. Honor her, remember her, act for her.”
Yeah, right . . . as if Her Royal Cupcakeness had heard of RBG before some PR flack wrote that blather for her. No word from defrocked Prince Harry as to whether RBG inspired him to become a little girl . . .
OK, fine, but, sorry, at the risk of seeming cruel and uncouth, might we ask for proof of that judicial greatness?
I see lots of puff pieces and hagiographies, e.g., here, but they come off rather skimpy when listing her achievements as a Justice.
OK, I got it: she favored killing unborn children and "promoting" women, but other than that? What?
Just a thought.
She apparently had a respectful, cordial, and even friendly relationship with her ideological counterpart, Scalia, for many years.
ReplyDeleteWhat I would give to have my progressive colleagues and now-former friends comport themselves with such dignity as to not *require* everybody they know to hold their identical views in order to be treated respectfully. So many of them just *loved* RBG, but that is one aspect they will *not* emulate. That might involve having to have their own opinion stand on merits other than social-media-reinforced virtue signaling.

I agree. It would be nice to be able to exchange facts and ideas in various forums without the need to resort to insults.
DeleteMy impressions of your comments directed at the host here are that they are pointed and typically caustic at best or more typically rude/demeaning.
DeleteOur host doesn't appear to be looking for validation from anybody here, much less anonymous commenters... so it's not like the tone helps in persuasiveness.

'Amazing' is a word much like 'exceptional.'
ReplyDeleteBoth of them have a good definition and a bad definition.
Exceptional means - not the normal, whether a positive exception or a negative exception. Like the bus for the 'special' students that is labeled as XYZ Exceptional School, and the students are... exceptional. What we used to call 'retarded' or 'handicapped.'
In this case, 'Amazing' can be either 'Oh, how wonderful!' or 'Oh, how did anyone get away with all that shite?'
Kind of like the Southern phrase, "Bless XYZ's little heart" doesn't actually mean... bless that person's heart.
"After all, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named did great things — terrible, yes, but great."
DeleteAmbiguity can be fun!:-)
The only sure outcome from this development...Ginsburg will vote, vote early, and vote often, from now on.
ReplyDeleteShe'll also continue voting for Democrats, sadly, since all the dead people do. (I wish that was a joke.)
DeletePresident Trump really must get his candidate through without delay: with all the lawsuits that the Dems are sure to bring when he wins reelection, there has to be a fully filled Supreme Court. That ensures at least a 5-4 result; if the Court vacancy isn't filled, then very likely there'd be a 4-4 tie, and I just can't imagine how that wouldn't lead to a hot Civil War.
As to Ginsberg, it's her own ego that should be blamed for her inability to have a like-minded successor. She could have, and should have, resigned when Barry the Phony was president; but I'm glad she decided to try & hold out until after Trump's term was over. It's always satisfying to see someone evil get their comeuppance, even if it's after they are dead. And yes, she was evil. She wanted millions of babies killed, and so they were. Her reception at the Gates of Heaven was probably not to her liking, and I don't doubt that she is enjoying a much warmer climate now!
She really only had the first two years of obama's term.. like the rest of the progressives, she was probably extremely surprised that their nazi agenda didn't keep the senate in 2010.
Deleteand by 'keep' meaning that replacements would've been much tougher than 2009/2010
DeleteSeems every image of her at work,
ReplyDeletethat I saw caught her napping...
Thankfully,
she wasn't a commercial pilot,
but sadly, those kids WHO were
suctiioned out, got a raw deal!
Perhaps a prayer of thanksgiving, is in order for the heavenly messenger who collected her before she wanted to depart?
Happily, some 'can't always get what they want'...
Like the silly woman interviewed on TV, she voiced in broken English, her ignorant and misinformed discontent with "Trump", for even considering filling Judge Ginsberg's vacated Supreme Ct seat during an election year!
Maybe in the next DJT Admin, US Citizenship will >require a 'Citizens Certicate of Merit', earned over a 6 month period of civics classwork, working a legal JOB, and compleating a comprehensive Final Test -- failing which, gets the applicant a free ticket back to where they came from.

"Let's Roll"
RBG should have stepped down long ago since she was unable to execute her duties as Justice due to her debilitating battle with cancer. Instead she decided to try and hang on until after the 2020 election where hopefully a Democrat would be elected president. Now the Dems will try and accuse Trump of ramming through a nominee.
ReplyDeleteNow the Dems will try and accuse Trump of ramming through a nominee.
DeleteWhy. Will Trump try to ram through a nominee? It did take three months each for Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, and that was without the major interruptions of an election campaign.
Frankly, there's a part of me that would like to see people like Schumer get the treatment meted out not too long ago to Rand Paul as he and his wife walked down the street. Unfortunately, instead of sitting back and wondering if they, too, have a responsibility to restore civility to our discourse, the Dems will think they have more of a license to riot.
DeleteRBG's family deserves sympathy and respect during this time of mourning. RBG herself had admirable qualities, but it is a shame they were used chiefly to destroy unborn children, make a mockery of the pre-political institution of marriage, and turn men and women into natural rivals rather than natural mutual complements.
Exceptional - oh,yeah! she could have stepped down several years ago and given the socialist another far left seat; she knew she had a limited time. There's a good word to describe her, sort of similar to exceptional in its negative nuance: chutzpah!
ReplyDeleteExcept that she KNEW, as everyone else did, that Hillary was inevitable an she wanted to wait for HER to become anointed and RBGs gift to HER would be a first year SCOTUS nomination.
DeleteIt was a perfect Feminist setup. And then Trump won and it was too late for her to do anything except try to hold out until the bad orange man was gone.
But Karma had other plans.
If you have nothing good to be said about the dead, say nothing. But do take action to ensure repeats are rare indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the thought, but if you don't mind very much, I'll continue to say quite a bit about the following and their followers:

The election was a dumpster. That BLM and Antifa set on fire. And has now been thrown into a volcano.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of a Supreme Court Justice selection is no longer a theoretical political exercise. It is a fact that will cause voter turnout...legal and illegal to explode.
And should Biden win, but Trump's choice still be confirmed in a lameduck session, I would not be at all shocked if Pelosi attempts to impeach that Justice...especially if the Democrats take the Senate.
As it stands...after the stunt that the Democrats pulled with Kavanaugh, waiting until the last second to release "information" they have been holding in secret for weeks, followed by the perjured "testimony" of Ms Ford (that even her best friend and eye witness said never happened)..the Democrats have zero cause to complain about anything that Trump and the republican Senate wants to do...especially since it is absolutely Constitutional.
I don't think Trump/GOP will wait. Writing was on the wall for Ginsburg. I would be shocked if they didn't have a nominee vetted and disclosured already. Give the dems a week or two to get their shots in, the not-a-filibuster is already gone, vote, be done with it... take the victory lap the week before the election.
ReplyDeleteIt's the deal that Trump has with his voters. It's about yanking that court out of its social engineering role before a bunch of out-of-touch harvard/yale goons can screw things up further.
"Go back to the Constitution and determining whether the laws congress *passes* meet muster."
srsly.. inventing 'rights' out of whole cloth.. and Roberts is on the poop side of many of those sticks.

Trump shows his usual class by waiting until RBGs Formal Laying in State and National Remembrance are complete before he announces any selection (hoping The Left does not figure out that if they just leave her corpse laying in the rotunda like Lenin's corpse in Moscow until January 20th they can extend the Honors to RGB indefinitely).
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime the Left is declaring the (supposed) Last Wishes of a person should override what the Constitution says.
LYING in state. Not laying.

ReplyDeleteThank you, very much. I will read the report.
DeletePardonnez-moi,
DeleteIf I may, A Teaser on page 3 of the "Executive Summary" provided sleepy ol' me with some motivation (kick in the britches) to continue reading the 87 pp. Report:
The 2014 protests in Kyiv came to be known as the Revolution of Dignity — a revolution
against corruption in Ukraine. Following that revolution, Ukrainian political figures were
desperate for U.S. support. Zlochevsky would have made sure relevant Ukrainian officials were
well aware of Hunter’s appointment to Burisma’s board as leverage. Hunter Biden’s position on
the board created an immediate potential conflict of interest that would prove to be problematic
for both U.S. and Ukrainian officials and would affect the implementation of Ukraine policy.
The Chairmen’s investigation into potential conflicts of interest began in August 2019,
with Chairman Grassley’s letter to the Department of Treasury regarding potential conflicts of
interest with respect to Obama administration policy relating to the Henniges transaction.1
During the Obama administration, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States
(CFIUS) approved a transaction that gave control over Henniges, an American maker of antivibration technologies with military applications, to a Chinese government-owned aviation
company and a China-based investment firm with established ties to the Chinese government.
One of the companies involved in the Henniges transaction was a billion-dollar private
investment fund called Bohai Harvest RST (BHR). BHR was formed in November 2013 by a
merger between the Chinese-government-linked firm Bohai Capital and a company named
Rosemont Seneca Partners. Rosemont Seneca was formed in 2009 by Hunter Biden, the son of
then-Vice President Joe Biden, by Chris Heinz, the stepson of former Secretary of State John
Kerry, and others.2
