I had begun to have doubts that he would pull the trigger. I guess I had read too much media about all the possible permutations of a possible President Trump announcement on the absurd Paris Climate Agreement (the link provided has the entire text; if you have nothing else to do, please read it. I find that the people who most support it, haven't read it.)
President Trump spoke in his usual blunt way, i.e., not a whole lot of diplo-speak,
I am fighting every day for the great people of this country. Therefore, in order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord -- (applause) -- thank you, thank you -- but begin negotiations to reenter either the Paris Accord or a really entirely new transaction on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers. So we’re getting out. But we will start to negotiate, and we will see if we can make a deal that’s fair. And if we can, that’s great. And if we can’t, that’s fine. (Applause.)
As President, I can put no other consideration before the wellbeing of American citizens. The Paris Climate Accord is simply the latest example of Washington entering into an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries, leaving American workers -- who I love -- and taxpayers to absorb the cost in terms of lost jobs, lower wages, shuttered factories, and vastly diminished economic production.
Thus, as of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris Accord and the draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on our country. This includes ending the implementation of the nationally determined contribution and, very importantly, the Green Climate Fund which is costing the United States a vast fortune. He laid out the case for getting out of the Accord in a magnificent manner; it's well-worth reading the whole announcement.
He identified it clearly as just another progressive wealth suppression and distribution scheme, that would increase government power, diminish the economic opportunities of ordinary Americans, further burden the US taxpayer, and do nothing about the environment. It allowed YUGE polluters such as China and India waivers on just about everything for years to come, and promised India trillions of dollars in aid. It set up a bureaucratic monstrosity, some sort of UN-run Green Fund, that would administer billions of dollars to Third World countries to help them (unspecified how) fight climate change. All rubbish.
I have seen some commentators saying the President should have gone along with the Agreement because it was voluntary, and we could unwind its provisions quietly at home. Yeah, yeah. Look, I have written before about how progressives use words to change the nature of debate. They also aim at false targets, "we . . . find repeatedly that the announced target of progressive wrath is not the ultimate target. The target is altered." The real target of this sort of accord is not combating some illusory global warming or cooling. It is about increasing the power of the institutions controlled by progressives. The United States, for example, is a nation obsessed with laws. An accord such as this one, although not ratified by the Senate, would quickly find its way into our law books and spawn endless lawsuits and civil actions against firms, individuals, and government agencies not complying with the Accord. It is yet another in the endless effort to provide full employment to divisions of progressive lawyers.
Thank you, President Trump.
Right on! Both to President Trump for doing it and to Diplomad II for his analysis. This was a bad accord from the git-go. Mara Liasson just said on Fox that it has great popular support -- one of her co-panelists blew that statement right out of the water by citing numbers that show it's support is "in the low single digits".
ReplyDeleteThen she tried saying climate change resonates with young voters. Probably more so than people my age, but they also vote less. Charles Krauthammer called it what it is: a transfer of coal mining jobs from West Virginia to India.
When Mara Liasson tried to say this agreement reflects general American sentiment, my immediate thought was it reflects the sentiment of one man, who is no longer President.
This is truly a weight lifted off America's shoulders. Now if only we could take back the pallet-load of Euros we gave the Iranians so they can pay for terrorists, and tear up the piece of paper John Kerry signed with them in Paris.
What a great feeling to begin having the weight of the Obama presidency lifted from the backs of the American taxpayer!
I have been yelling at my TV about this poll, where are the internals! Did they interview only on college campuses or Democratic areas; we don't know and thus can't judge the information. Especially when we saw what happened with polls during the 2016 presidential campaign
Delete...great feeling to begin having the weight of the Obama presidency lifted from the backs of the American taxpayer!"
DeleteYes, "begin" is right, but one worries and wonders, when the GOPe will allow real Tax relief to flow to taxpayers? Or is such a thing impossible in light of the CRUSHING DEBT and DEFICITS that the Democrat Party and their GOPe collaborators have saddled US with?
I do take solace in the fact that Hilary Clinton's defeat empowered Trump to temporarily divert the Democrat engineered Financial avalanche barreling down on US. Yes, nixing the 'Paris Agreement' is certainly an inspiring victory for US deplorables, but its going to be a long slog before we get to the Top o' Hill!
On Watch~~~
Good! I hope he continues to do good in the short spell available before the bastards assassinate him.
ReplyDeleteOh so dreary sometimes dearie, let's hope, and pray too, that his "spell" lasts a lot longer than the bastagges plan on! Btw, my old Scots granny lived a hundred years, The Donald of Queens, has those genes too, metinks!
DeleteOW~~~
The accord was so badly written and such a bad deal that it would never get through the Senate (well, until the next time we lose our minds and give the Democrats a filibuster proof super-majority). It did give Obama the excuse to whip out his pen and Executive Order this disaster into being...but you live by the pen and your Legacy dies by the pen.
ReplyDeleteAnother win for our newest Superhero...MAGAman...that the media and Left (but I repeat myself) will caterwaul and whine about some mythical loss of American prestige because of this.
@KellyJ
DeleteI wish the president had done something different, but to the same immediate effect:
Submit the accord to the Senate as a treaty. It would have gone down in flames, and we'd be out. Problem solved.
Longer-term, doing this would have reaffirmed the forgotten concept that the president Just Can't Do accords of this sort on his own authority, at least not constitutionally. Future presidents would have hesitated to repeat Obama's gambit.
The Dems were perfectly happy with Obama, who turned out to be a pretty close replica of an elected dictator. They would have been even happier to continue their party with Michelle in the Oval Office and Barack pulling her strings, a la George and Lurleen Wallace (readers of a certain age will get that reference).
Come to think of it, maybe that was the deal Obama had with Hillary. It would explain a few things.
In any event, Trump had a sterling opportunity to set the precedent of reining in the imperial presidency and returning some power to the people's elected representatives, and he didn't take it. Maybe he considers himself to be the sole embodiment of the people's representative to the exclusion of any others (some of his supporters seem to feel that way). If that's the case, it could ultimately be toxic to the Constitution and our system of government.
So yes, he did the right thing for the right reasons, but he did it the wrong way.
President is tasked with diplomacy and foreign policy. He can sign whatever document he wants. He can even to all in his executive power to follow the documents he has signed. Without ratification, what he signed does not become the law of the land.
DeleteI'm guessing that future administrations will come to the point where jan 20th includes a blanket executive order rolling back all executive orders from the previous administration.

I concur with both people above. I am disappointed that the fact #Zero was not empowered to enter us into a treaty unilaterally was not more emphasized!

Our pals at NPR had a "summary of the Paris Agreement" up for linking this last day or two. It was a very good summary. Clearly, this was a Mirage Agreement of the highest order. A bunch of commitments but no actual enforcement, except the part where boatload of US cash disappears into the firmament of the greenies.
ReplyDeleteEven NPR couldn't put effective lipstick on this pig!
thanks for the pdf link.. never though to look it up...

I guess the reason I never looked up the paris climate thing, is because I strongly disagree with the foundations upon which it's built.
DeleteIn my view, there is limited and unreliable evidence of warming over the past 30 years (satellite data which has had to be ex-post-facto adjusted to keep it from showing cooling or no warming). There are extremely specious, very unreliable, and *highly* adjusted temperature records going back much further, but they barely merit a publication in a decent scientific journal (ie, they're merely "the best guess science has to offer" when it comes to the question of "what does the temperature record look like back to the 1800's in these very few places?").
Now... pile on top of that, the question of whether global human CO2 emissions are a strong component of that questionable warming and we get "dodgy squared" evidence, upon which we're going to sink our economy.
No thanks,
- reader #1482
"Obviously nobody even proof-read this hunk of garbage...". Kind of like the Democrats "healthcare bill" of a few years ago. The point is not what the bill or the agreement says it is, or the rationale behind, it is how much power global Leftists can accumulate in the name of "climate" or health because agencies involved would have had a field day writing new regs and rules that Congress would never have passed otherwise. The "merits" of climate were the distraction, the goal is always more central power.

BC you are right on track! The Left goes from awareness, to calling attention, to activism and then demanding. It will be ____Justice. Just like certain crimes are not bad enough in themselves, some become "hate"crimes. Eventually comes "hate speech" and then hate thought and even hate activity.

ReplyDeleteI listened to some shocked progressives discussing Trumps speech on our Swedish news ( I felt wonderful Schadenfreude, by the way ). They started worrying about Poland and other countries wanting to get out but then cheered up when they realized that the mighty EU had signed on so, no no, impossible to back out. EU is really a prison, isn´t it ? I believe these Global Warming plotters really want to create another EU, a new bureaucratic Monstrosity, to control the world and siphon heaps of tax money for them to use and misuse. Trump asked, where goes the Green Fund money ? Good question indeed. And how can the temperature go lower if you hand corrupt countries like India, Indonesia a lot of money ? Technology, education, lower birthrates, control of corruption, that´s what get us on the right track. And that is every countries responsibility.

Swedish lady, I love your comments. Great perspective. Keep them coming!

I think that the fact that our EPA had labeled carbon dioxide, the basis of all life on Earth, as a "pollutant" says it all. History will marvel at the loopiness of our times ... much stranger than the tulip mania.
ReplyDeleteSince Congress didn't list the actual pollutants for the EPA to regulate, the SCOTUS allowed CO2 to be regulated. Government running wild as usual when there is an opening.
DeleteAnother point ... why Russia would sign onto this fraud is strange. I thought they are smart people? If global warming were real (doubtful), Russia would have more ice-free ports and Siberia farms could feed the world.
ReplyDeleteThe Russians are bad actors but smart players. Their signature means nothing.
DeleteYeah.. Russia is probably no death-locked into bureaucracy... a tactical advantage they happen to have.
DeleteThe only thing worse than the Paris Accord, would have been for Obama to sign it in 2009 with his compliant congress and nobel peace prize.

Trump came away with a great line "I am the President of Pittsburgh, not Paris."

ReplyDeleteThe disgruntled claim that the US is the biggest polluter. On what is that based? Per capita? Per square mile? Pounds of something or other into the air and water per something or other? What?
ReplyDeletePer the needed lie for a king size guilt trip which will be swallowed by the young and the Academic set as well as the media.
DeleteI am astounded at how devoid of content CNN is in reporting this: nothing beyond the headlines about what Trump said, only about what the critics say. It's unreal.
ReplyDeletetotally unfair... CNN also includes what Trump's critics "say that Trump said"! :) (obviously nothing like what he actually said)

ReplyDeleteAll excellent points above which describe the malevolence which was to spring from this rotten pile of progressive garbage. Concur with all and thank you for stating them.
ReplyDeleteHadn't thought about the boon to the lawyer-parasites, so sad they won't get to extort decent businesses via the corrupt courts.
All the right usual suspects are squealing like stuck pigs? Good.
NWO thugs along with criminals and commies - redundant, yes I agree - always squeal list stuck pigs when cops bust their interminable shakedown rackets, of which this 'accord' was one.
Let them scream as good citizens rejoice.
It takes a special sort of dingbat sociopath true-believer, one experienced in hallucinations, perhaps an aging 60s acid head, to see a causal relationship twixt shaking down and destroying American businesses, and somehow saving Gaia-mama, all the while giving license to India, the chicoms and other crooked regimes, yet again, to pollute at will.
By what political alchemy does impoverishing Americans and destroying their businesses somehow create flourishing societies abroad, all the while supposedly curing Ma Gaia's lumbago?
Nice touch, setting the false target of reducing Ma Gaia's fever by two tenths of one degree by the year 2100; clever that very few who're cognizant of temperature today will be alive to validate the reduction.
Thank you, President Trump.
Thank you for winning.
By now, had Mme. DuFarge wangled her way to stolen victory, the Clinton 'Australian style gun control' pogrom would be well underway, with house to house inspections, confiscations and Waco-style examples made of those who failed to surrender even their popguns.
