Trump Rolls On

OK. Are there any other world leaders out there? If so, they shouldn't bother coming to work. Take a holiday. Enjoy the coming summer in the northern hemisphere and the coming winter in the south. Just go home. Relax. Trump's got ya covered.

He does it, yet again.

He has killed the Iran nuclear "deal."

Trump knows how to do foreign policy.  We've had to put up with decades of condescending lectures from the traditional foreign policy "elites" on how difficult foreign policy is; how it's just more complex than YOU could ever understand; don't try it at home; and just leave it to the experts. Seems that our President is following in the foot-steps of Ronald Reagan, and even blazing a few paths of his own when it comes to foreign policy. Amazing how a clear articulation of purpose, a demonstration of strength, and a refusal to accept the standard bromides produces different results. What's that definition of crazy? Shall we say, President Trump is destroying the world order in order to save the world? Sounds good.

The mullahs in Teheran, the murderers in ISIS, Pyongyang and Damascus, as well as the virtue-signaling, pearl-clutching bien pensants in Hollywood, media, academe, and all the capitals of the Far Abroad, now know they're dealing with a different sort of U.S. President. Thank the Lord this President has followed the Diplomad's long-standing foreign policy dictum, "Do not listen to the Europeans,"
[T]he surest way to lose American lives and treasure is to listen to the Europeans. Europe has not gotten anything right on the world stage since, well, since . . . well, since at least the French Revolution.
Let's not forget that since the USA became a significant player, the principal aim of European leaders has been to embroil the USA in Europe's wars, have the USA fix the messes caused by European leaders, but have the USA take instructions from Europe's leaders. Even Churchill, whom I admire immensely, was not immune; he desperately wanted the mighty US in WWII, but wanted to dictate the how and the where of the application of US power. We, of course, previously saw the same thing in WWI. In that conflict, 100 years ago, the geniuses in the European high commands needed US troops to halt a resurgent Germany after the exit of Russia from the war, but did not want an independent US force. Pershing successfully resisted them. Vietnam and Libya were also two messes in which we became involved to bail out Europe. Let us also not forget that the long years of the Cold War involved the US footing the bulk of the bill for defense, allowing Europe to maintain Legoland militaries and spend their own wealth building cradle-to-grave social welfare systems, which, of course, relied on the despised US military for protection.

It goes on and on . . uh, well, not any longer. Just as Reagan did before in rejecting European advice on how to handle the USSR, it seems that Trump has a very clear home-grown idea of how to do things in the interest of the United States. About time.

The "deal" with Teheran was a classic convoluted mess so favored by the Euros and their admirers such as John Kerry. I have written a great deal about that "deal" (here, herehere, and here, for example, and there's lots more). Don't want to repeat all I have said before except to restate that this was a classic con job.

Of course, the Iranians and the Europeans are upset over President Trump's bold announcement that we are walking away from this "deal." As I have noted before, the "deal" guaranteed Iran's acquiring a nuclear weapon, while, mostly European and Russian companies make a lot of money off the Iranian regime whose bank accounts became flush with billions of dollars and euros magnanimously provided by the Obama misadministration in the dead of night.

As to American opinion, I conducted my own highly "scientific" poll. Yesterday, I was at my local gun store, doing a little shopping in the wake of having received my concealed carry permit. Four "customers" were siting in the back of the little semi-rural gun store ("Green Acres"!) when the president came on TV to announce the end of the Iran so-called deal. All four broke into spontaneous applause, with one elderly gent wearing a Korean War Vet cap, telling his wife, "The President has done a great thing!"

There the science is settled, and now . . .

Let the fainting begin!

We hear cries of outrage from Obama, Kerry, and Clinton, of course, who see their "legacy" coming apart. The Iranians are running to Russia and Europe trying to save a vestige of the "deal" to make sure the goodies keep flowing. Kerry, of course, is repeating his anti-American antics of decades ago: just as he did with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong delegations in Paris during the Vietnam War peace talks, he has been in Europe trying to strike some sort of new "deal" with Iran to undermine the US president. Kerry does treason quite well.

Among the many curious things being said is that Trump's walking away from this "deal," imperils our ability to reach a deal with North Korea. Well, yes, it does imperil the ability to reach a "deal" like the one with Iran, but that's what we don't want! While the fainters fainted, newly minted SecState Pompeo flew into Pyongyang to set up the forthcoming meeting between Kim and Trump, and flew out bringing home three American hostages. Sounds like Kim is more than willing to deal, and Trump has his measure of the man.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy is opening in Jerusalem, and the pearl-clutchers can't believe that the world has not come to an end, yet again. The Saudis and other Arabs are making friendly noises towards Israel, clearly seeking Israeli support against Iran, and have supported Trump's move on the faux deal. They know from whence the threat comes, and it's not from Tel Aviv Jerusalem. The mullahs are rightfully in panic mode.

I can't wait for President Trump to turn his full attention to the threat on our southern border and put an end to Mexican interference in our politics.

Roll on!

  5. Only thing better would be seeing Kerry arrested on arrival and held without bail for giving aid and comfort to our enemies, aka Treason.

  6. Maybe the Diplomad can clarify something for me: can the US government take away someone's passport? I seem to recall that they can, but that was never anything I dealt with.

But if so, it is certainly time that "Box o' Rocks" Kerry's was taken.

Sorry esteemed host, but in this you are quite wrong. The French Revolution resulted in a conveyor-belt murder orgy, one of the favorite past times of socialists. And like all past-times of socialists, it is always wrong.

If you want an example of the last thing Continental Europe got right, you're looking at either The Spanish Reconquista or The Gates of Vienna, though the latter was a last minute save from the standard Euro FUBAR.

  14. You're being more than slightly unfair to the Cold War European militaries, and transplanting the '90s and '00s to the '80s. The Bundeswehr, for example, had more than 12 divisions worth of troops, and the French had a similarly sized force. Even the Danes had at least two division's worth of troops in their army. Hardly "Legoland militaries."
That having been said, the state of Europe' current armed forces is utterly miserable. At the point where you need American help to take on Libya, something is very, very wrong.

I totally agree with Pat Buchanan here . I think it is a terrible move to trash the Iranian deal. Terrible. You were lied into the Iraqi war , how did that turn out ? Don´t go there again. This time, at least listen to European leaders instead of taking instructions from Saudi and Israel. When the war begins ( again !!!), Europe will be hit again since we do not have have a protective ocean between us and the war zone like you have in the US. I consider the Saudis as enemies of the West. Saudi, and not Iran, is , as far as I know, the country that finance the Islamisation of Europe.

    1. Prior policy, including the Iran deal, was continuing to strengthen Iran's hand in the middle east conflagration. I'm sure a lot of people were fine with this. Israel, unsurprisingly, wasn't.
When it comes to the middle east, there is only one country that isn't a hot mess of oppression and terror... Israel.
We saw Iran continue to increase their presence in Iraq, Syria, Gaza, and Lebanon. Iran's target is quite clear and their dictator has openly discussed their plans for Israel.
Considering that Khamenei openly espouses his plans for the destruction of Israel, and Trump's claim that he wants Israel to persist, Trump would feel foolish if he ignored this and Iran attacked Israel. Trump most definitely doesn't want to feel foolish, perhaps even to the point of a flaw.

Yes, Israel is a fine country but the present governments paranoia is harmful for the country. And for many other countries. I have read that many Israelis, generals and people within the security establishment , think that Iran is complying with the deal, it should be allowed to remain. Iran is a big country and now, after years of wars and sanctions, on the threshold of rebuilding and modernisation. Corporate Europe saw many, many business opportunities. And now ? Phil Giraldi, in the linked article, see Trumps move as a pyrrhic victory.Trump and Netanyahi will enjoy the applauds from their staunch supporters but their victory will be illusory as the hard reality of what they have accomplished will be clear. I believe that Iran now will give the business contracts to Russia and China and they will get their nuclear capacity but without the wests control. US-Saudi tried regime change in Syria but did not succeed, They will not succeed in the much bigger country Iran either. Why not try something else ? Behind your back China is conquering the world with their "soft" power. I feel a little uncomfortable with China and its ambitions. I would much prefer the US with soft power.

    3. I don't think it is realistic to expect good results when bad people make underhanded deals with other bad people. Things are always bad in the Middle East. Things can always get worse in the Middle East too. Events there will have to break this cycle and we may be at the beginning.

Here he is explaining the US politics in his excellent way. I trust him and I usually agree with him.
      https://www.antiwar.com/blog/2018/05/09/ron-paul-on-trump-killing-the-iran-deal-who-wins-who-loses/
He talks about the big Boeing -deal , the money and the jobs that will be lost, he thinks it is absurd to keep claiming that Iran is such a threat to the US. And in his opinion the neocon politics doesn´t serve the interest of the US nor does it serve world peace. And it all sounds very sensible to me.

    5. They never stopped leading their followers in chants of "death to America". I think that what we're even doing now, namely nothing, is suicidal on our part.
"We're just going to wait for you to figure out how to accomplish your stated goal of destroying us." is the ultimate in hubris.
In order for that statement to make any sense at all, we have to add: "we're so advanced and so superior, that they have no possibility of succeeding." in order to make any sense at all.
That predicate is always *implied*, but never stated, because if it were, people would recognize it for the hubris that it is.
Iran is our enemy, by *their* choice, not ours. We need to treat them as that enemy, not denigrate them as being "children who just don't know any better and can't accomplish what they say they want".

Same, but worse, goes for Israel.
If my neighbor were threatening to kill me, I wouldn't just console myself with thinking "he probably doesn't have a gun".

I don't know if this helps the discussion.... it's just.. my impression of the situation is very very different. When someone sets themselves up as an enemy like that, it seems fundamentally incompetent to do nothing. And making trade profits doesn't cut it, for me.

    6. "Reader #1482",the flag burning and the chants looks menacing but most of all stupid , should big, strong US really care about that ? Iran, formerly the proud historic Persia, is unfortunately kidnapped by crazy Islamists ( Europes future too ???...) and full of intolerant , ignorant imams and frustrated muslims. But I believe that the present politicians are really trying a new course. And, when did Iran really attack the US ? Was there ever a terrorist from Iran ? However, many of the terrorists in the 9/11 attack were Saudis. The Saudi kings, Trumps new best friends. Iranians might think that they need nuclear strength in order to be left alone, they have seen the faith of Iraq and Libya. It is rational from their point of view. You don´t have to immediately jump to the conclusion that they will annihilate their neighbours. But having said that, I am all for that we need to stop more nuclear weapons in the world. Well I know this is complicated and I understand that this is about something else than meets the eyes. It is about Russia, about energy ,about who, Sunni or Shia, is to rule the MiddleEast and about who are their best friends. The present Israeli government is in cohorts with the Saudis which I very much dislike. It does not bode well for Europe.

Rouhami now wants to stick to the deal even without the US but the senior cleric, Ayatollah Khatami, doesn´t want to. Seems like Rouhami o needs some help here and I hope at least Europe will stick to the deal as it serves European interests. Maybe Trump can come around if it is partly renegotiated.I mean, he has already made his political point.

    9. Iran has only one authority, Ayatollah Khamenei. There are no useful elections in Iran, as everything is ultimately up to Khamenei.
The 'President' and their parliament can do *nothing* without the blessing of Khamenei. Even when Ahmadinejad was "President", he also had no authority.
Khamenei chooses who can/can't even be on the ballot.
Khamenei chooses whether or how fast Iran works on nukes.
Iran is a complete dictatorship, and nobody should be fooled by their faux-elections any more than they're fooled by old Saddam, Assad, or Putin's.
