Happy Australia Day

I loved Australia Day when I was overseas. The Aussies had the best gatherings.

I hoist one to you, Australia. You have a great country. Keep it that way!

  1. Well thank you.

It is been a pleasant holiday break her in Western Australia.

Politically, our change of Federal Govt has been a good thing. The illegal boats full of "country shoppers" have all but ceased: none in the past five weeks. Indonesia is twirling its skirts, but who cares? They hate us, the bleeding hearts just have to wake up to that fact.

Australia just needs to tidy up a few loose ends and we will be the Lucky Country once again. Here's hoping.

    Thanks again.

Yeah, I am still snickering about the fact that one needs a firearms license in Australia to have a paintball marker (except of course in the one state and one major territory that have banned them completely).

Guess I am just a gun nut.

    2. Different cultures different rules, after being in the USA, I would take the overall Australian restrictions over the USA ones.

  3. Thanks Dip.

I'm on t'other side of the continent/island/nation to Stephen and Robyn.

The day was suitably celebrated with friends [one born in Austria and the other in Georgia USA - both now proud Aussies] with a B-B-Q and a few cold beers for the blokes and cold crisp white wine for the ladies [if I called them sheilas SWMBO would give me a knuckle sandwich].

I agree with Stephen and Robyn's sentiments on the change of government.

    Cheers

    1. Good morning David, long time no talk to. I note you have a friend born in Austria. Since I don't see that fine country in print often, do you know what town or province? Many years ago I attended the University of Graz, Graz Austria. Loved the town and indeed the entire country and her people. A true high light for me.

      Anyway, happy Australia Day.

    2. G'day Whitewall,

Not sure other than it was in a hilly bit but then I thought all of Austria was hilly. Some of them just bigger than others

      I shall ask her

  4. Good win on the Ashes to the upside down folk, but next time could y'all sneak the U19 side in instead? Getting embarrassing for old blighty.

    1. Don't know about the U19's Nonny.

The Poms gave us a right old walloping on the tour of England so fair is fair - we just returned the compliment.

World Cup [of Cricket for the unenlightened] in Bangladesh should be good. The English one day side are not to be taken lightly. Though having worked in Dhaka a few years ago and looking at what they call a pitch anything could happen.

    1. He's at work, where he should be, not on TV spewing forth irrelevant thought bubbles that once passed as policy for the previous government.

  6. I have often thought Australia is what America would be if we had a parliamentary system of government, a queen, and beer in one liter cans.

    1. G'day F,

You did have your chance but threw it away around 1776.

Just one small amendment to your post - it should read "cold beer" in one litre cans.

As far as I know only our Brit cousins drink warm beer.

    2. I stand corrected -- cold beer. Thank God for that! P.S. I still don't understand why you don't fall off into space, being on the bottom and all. I'm just happy you don't.

    3. We may soon find out what it's like to have a queen.

      Or maybe we already have.

    4. Hey, having spent July in Old Blighty wearing a pullover, I understand why the Brits drink warm beer!

    5. It's an urban myth that the Brits drink warm beer. When I was living and working in the UK I got to see inside the cellars of various pubs and their beer, lagers, stouts and 'heavies' are fed to the taps through the same Temprite pumps we use in Australia only the level of refrigeration is not as severe as we like it Down Under. Some 'Real Ales' are served at room temperature but in the main British beers are chilled.
