And . . .We Have Barney!

As this little post is being drafted it appears that the Blue Dems will take control of the House of Reps and are going to gain over 30 seats, maybe 35. The Red Reps will keep the Senate and expand their margin by (it seems) three seats. So, in my most humble opinion, we saw neither a Blue wave nor a Red tide; we got us a Purple Barney.

Under normal circumstances, yesterday's results are OK for everybody. We have split government of a sort that the Founders seemed to prefer. Nobody has too much power, and everybody has to make deals to get half of a loaf.

Not bad, except . . . these are NOT normal times. There is an element of craziness and mob rule in the Democratic party that is (understatement) troubling for the future of our country. The first order of business will be to put an end to uncovering the scandals of the FBI, CIA and DOJ. We will see an attempt to revive the dying Russia! probe. We will see lots of loose talk about impeachment of Trump and Kavanaugh and anybody else they don't like, and endless impeachment investigations. We will see an end to legislated border security and efforts to put an end to election fraud. Forget coming up with a reasonable federal budget, and there will be an effort to cut the military. I have no idea what will happen with the new NAFTA deal which requires House approval.

On the good news side: If you had to pick one chamber to control, the Senate is the one. The GOP has that and more comfortably than the numbers alone would indicate. There are no McCains or Flakes unless newly elected Senator Mitt Romney decides to take on the "maverick" role. That means the effort to transform the judiciary into protectors of the Constitution can continue. That's a good thing. It also means no impeachment effort will prosper, also a good thing.

So let's see how President Trump handles Barney, a creature naturally disposed to primeval swamps.

My suggestion? Not that anybody is asking or that President Trump needs my advice, but I would call Congress into session today. Ram as much of my agenda through the lame duck session as is possible. Hope that Paul Ryan, perhaps one of the biological fathers of the GOP loss in the House, doesn't come up with some reason to stall and muddy as he did on health care.

To bed.

  1. Maybe there's just time to impeach, try, and convict any judge on SCOTUS that the Repulsicants don't like. That would really annoy the Demorats.

  3. Before the changing of the guard in January, the Republicans should ram through the “Fairness in Government Act.” Which law would mandate that any information subpoenaed from the President by the House as part of an impeachment investigation would automatically be subpoenaed from the House leadership as well. Tax records, business dealings, family connections, private conversations, whatever is demanded of the President would be required from the Speaker and the chairman of the major committees, and from whomever voted for the impeachment resolution. All evidence made available to the Senate and the Justice Department.
It’s only fair. Aren’t we all in favor of transparency in government?

How's about placing a Presidential Medal of Freedom around Taylor Swift's throat? Taylor did afterall suggest Tennesseans get out and put Marsha Blackburn into the Senate no? And the Tennessee seat was the first to flip?

I'm trying to be helpful here so OW please don't take me to the woodshed outta hand. I mean had our side held the House my 'helpful suggestion' was gonna be DiFi getting one around her throat too. A twofer if you will.

  6. It's hardly a stinging rebuke of the sort we saw against Democrats in 2010 after their massive misunderstanding of their mandate with obamacare. If there had been just a couple fewer retirements and such among the GOP, the house could have been kept. As house leader, Ryan pretty well owns those.

These results means no border wall, and more rockets that will never fly.

  9. This Barney has a silver (red?) lining. The Republican House members who retired or lost were predominately of the Never Trumpers cadre. The Democrats who now hold those seats will be facing Trump on the ballot and, depending on how crazy Nancy wants to go, an angry electorate. How long will these new Congressmen sit on the sidelines being told by Octogenarians to shut up and vote as their told?
Gains in the Senate were huge...historically that doesn't happen in the first midterm. Murkowski and Collins are now irrelevant again. Keep packing the Bench with Constitutionalists Judges.
Every major candidate Obama fought for lost. The major candidates Trump fought for won (waiting for Minnesota but that wont change the balance in the Senate).
The 3 Senators who voted against Kavanaugh lost (Manchin vote for him and won...imagine that). To add insult to injury, now that the accusers are starting to come out and admit they lied (likely already known by the Left anyways) its awesome that supporting that lie led to their downfall.
And of course Crenshaw won his House race. Suck on that SNL.

    1. that the accusers are starting to come out and admit they lied

I have heard about one person who lied about being an accuser, but not about an accuser who lied. Who was that?

      Delete
    2. The main problem was that Feinstein bypassed established procedure. She did it with deft political timing, but the accusation never would've seen the light of day if it'd been handled by the standard procedure, which is intended to keep uncorroborated accusations from unfairly tarring nominees.
There was one accuser, one accusation, and there was no corroboration to be found among anybody who knew either person.
Honestly, it doesn't add up. Accusations should have come out of the woodwork if the original accusation was true.
As Collins said (like or hate her, in this case, she's right), if we establish the disqualification criteria *so* low, that a single uncorroborated accusation can cancel a nomination, there will never be another confirmation to any position.

    4. reader #1482,

There was one accuser called to testify, which is different from there being one accuser.

      JK,

The WATE web staff did not do its homework very well. Munro-Leighton is the woman to whom I referred as lying about being an accuser. She has acknowledged falsely claiming authorship of the Jane Doe letter, not fabricating it.

      https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/2018-11-02%20CEG%20to%20DOJ%20FBI%20(Munro-Leighton%20Referral)%20with%20redacted%20enclosures.pdf

This is not evidence regarding whether the Jane Doe was fabricated or not.

Not that it matters. Kavanaugh clearly lied in his testimony ("Renate alumnus" for one), and the Republicans and Manchin didn't care. I doubt any truth to the Jane Doe story would have changed that.

      Ooopsie Daisy:
"She [Justice Ginsberg]was admitted to the hospital for treatment and observation after tests showed she fractured three ribs.

In her absence, the court was going ahead Thursday with a courtroom ceremony welcoming new Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who joined the court last month. President Donald Trump and new acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker were expected to attend.

Ginsburg has had a series of health problems. She broke two ribs in a fall in 2012. She has had two prior bouts with cancer and had a stent implanted to open a blocked artery in 2014. She also was hospitalized after a bad reaction to medicine in 2009.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg rebuffed suggestions from some liberals that she should step down in the first two years of President Barack Obama’s second term, when Democrats also controlled the Senate and would have been likely to confirm her successor... "
